The stakes include a bowl, a season and maybe coach Dirk Koetter’s job at Arizona State, but Koetter doesn’t want to talk about any of the maybes attached to the annual ASU-Arizona grudge-fest Saturday in Tucson.

“I don’t open up the newspaper,” Koetter said Monday when asked for his reaction to media speculation that his job is on the line. “No offense to anybody.”

Despite each team’s 6-5 record, there is criticism of Koetter and praise for Arizona coach Mike Stoops.

The difference is rooted in expectations and late-season form.
