Phoenix Coyotes Trade Dennis Seidenberg

The Phoenix Coyotes trade defenseman Dennis Seidenberg to the Carolina Hurricanes for center Kevyn Adams this morning.

CasonBlog has his thoughts about Adams as a player and what the Hurricanes get is a defenseman who had limited ice time due to the surprises of Travis Roche and Matt Jones. It’s pretty funny that Michael Barnett took his advice and found a way to get Adams away from the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes were down to five healthy defensemen because of injuries and needed a healthy player. Seidenberg will help the overall team, but by how much remains to be seen. In 34 games last year with the Coyotes, Seidenberg had 11 points (one goal, ten assists) with a -9 rating. He hadn’t found his way into the lineup for the past two weeks and he has not been spectacular or a liability. He only has 2 points so far this season with a -4 rating. However, the trade moreso was a question of what the Hurricanes needed and we had too many defensemen in our lineup.

With Kevyn Adams, he has not played to his potential so far this season, or to where I have seen him play during his Stanley Cup run. He just couldn’t get anything started and has essentially underachieved to the point of being a liability for his team.

He is currently a -10 with only four points (two goals and two assists) and it has been his worst year so far in a Carolina Hurricanes uniform, and the worst year statistically in his career. Not since the 2002-2003 season has he put up these kinds of numbers with the Hurricanes.

During the playoffs, I saw how Kevyn Adams played the game and appreciated his uptempo, hit anything, energy type of play he provided. I hope that style returns so that he can help the Coyotes succeed.

I think the trade helps the Hurricanes more short term than long term, but I do hope Adams will fit in here. Maybe he just needs a new start.
