Minnesota Wild @ Phoenix Coyotes
The Phoenix Coyotes look to make it two in a row when they take on the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night.
The Wild hold the coveted eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference and are 10 points ahead of the Coyotes. A win Saturday night puts the Coyotes closer to within eight and a loss puts them farther behind 12 points away – definitely a huge game for the Coyotes.
They are all huge games now until the end of the season.
The Wild have won three of their last four games since the All-Star break and the Coyotes are .500 in that small stretch. In order to think about qualifying, they must win more than 60%.
The last time these two teams squared off in Glendale was back in November where the Coyotes grinded it out for a 4-3 win. It was one of those early victories that began to shape the identity of the team that refuses to give up. It also featured a much-hyped “Heavy Weight Bout” between Georges Laraque and Derek Boogaard.
Boogaard was a healthy scratch in the Wild’s contest against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him in the lineup on Saturday.
Unfortunately, for the Coyotes, they cannot let up in their focus or in their intensity. It will give the team important experience with playing under pressure where every game is more valuable than the previous one.
