With an imperative game tonight against the Minnesota Wild, the ‘Yotes make a run at the playoffs and the number 8 spot, which the Wild currently hold.
There are quite a few Minnesota faithful around campus at ASU, and I am lucky enough to have one live down the hall.
Here is his take: “The Coyotes are really hot right now and they are moving up in the divison and they are in one of the toughest divisions in the NHL which is going to hurt them in the long run.”
“They have the most legitimate chance of taking over the number 8 spot, but my guess is that the Wild are going to move up into the seeding while Vancouver and Calgary are dropping fast, leaving one of them to lose the spot to Phoenix”
I personally think that Phoenix is going to ride this hot streak into the playoffs. Despite my limited knowledge of the NHL, I do know sports. I have been to multiple Coyotes games during this hot streak, and they have a fire and a passion that will bring them into the post-season. They are scrappy and young, and in the NHL, that means something. It is what makes hockey different, and in many opinions better, than every other sport.
On a completely separate note, hockey is not dead in Phoenix and it never will be. Plenty of people preach and preach about the demise of hockey, especially in warm weather climates like Phoenix. I have even made some choice statements about the death of hockey, but the fact of the matter is, hockey will continue to grow as Arizona continues to grow. We all know and understand the growth of Arizona every day. If you have driven an automobile on any road in the state, you DEFINITELY know about the growth of Phoenix, and that growth stems from transplants.
We aren’t exactly pulling in boatloads of foreigners (truckloads may or may not be a different story. Although according to our government, a multi-million dollar wall should fix that.) The people in this great state come from other, lesser states.
And despite the fact that these migrators move mainly due to weather, they do not lose their love of hockey. So, as they continue to come to Arizona, fans will continue to come to Glendale Arena.
