As expected, Ladislav Nagy was traded to the Dallas Stars this morning for Mathias Tjarnqvist and a first round draft pick. The underperforming “sniper” leaves with only eight goals with 33 assists and a minus 2 rating. Contract extension talks were not going well with the troubled forward so the Coyotes wanted something for their asset.
Two other teams looked interested in the deal according to David Vest’s article in the Arizona Republic, but the Coyotes finished the deal with the Stars.
They gain a fourth line winger in Tjarnqvist, but they do gain a first round pick after giving up a fourth round pick to Toronto in the Tellqvist deal.
I am not at all surprised to see him go, and I wanted him off the team when he committed the terrible line change that gave up a 2-on-0 break earlier in the season against the Minnesota Wild. What is surprising is the unconventional trade within the division as it rarely occurs because one does not want former players hurting the team in tough divisional games; however, there may be a chance that the Stars will not be able to come to contract terms with Nagy in the off-season so it may not have long-term implications.
Even though the Coyotes were unhappy with Nagy, they did him a favor in the short-term by giving him an opportunity to learn how to play in stressful situations as the Stars seem solidly in the playoffs.
