Coyotes Win and Beat L.A. 3-2
On the first game of the home-at-home series with the Los Angeles Kings, the Phoenix Coyotes come away victorious and Curtis Joseph claws closer to Terry Sawchuk’s record. They also celebrated the retiring of Dale Hawerchuk’s number and recognize that yes, they were the Winnipeg Jets and they had some very talented players way before Temmu Selanne.
The Coyotes had energy as they hit before they were hit - a stark contrast from Tuesday night. The physicality paid off as Jeremy Roenick, having his best game of the season, deflected the first goal past Kings goal tender Sean Burke on a Derek Morris blast from right inside the Kings blue line.
Billy Thomas scores the second goal late in the first period and for the first time in a great long while, the Coyotes lead after the first.
J.R. did not stop there. After Tom Kostopoulos brings the Kings to within one goal in the second period, the Coyotes begin a very lengthy cycle in the Kings zone. Roenick passes the puck across ice to an available Shane Doan and he buries it for the Coyotes third goal of the night.
The Kings score their second goal with Mike Cammaleri’s 33rd goal of the season, but the Coyotes were able hold off the Kings until the end.
After the first period, the Coyotes out shot the Kings 20-5, which was a season record.
Saturday night, they head to Los Angeles for the final meeting with the Kings. One would think that after Sean Avery’s departure that the Kings/Coyotes rivalry would be less intense. With two teams that are at the bottom of the division, they played like they were in playoffs.
It was nice to see.
