Here is one more thing to take into consideration for those of you planning to be in the Phoenix area for Super Bowl XLII… the 2008 FBR Open will be taking place the same week (Jan. 31-Feb.3).
The Scottsdale golf tournament opens on Thursday and finishes on Sunday afternoon. Barring a playoff or weather delay, the champion is expected to be crowned at about 4 p.m., 20 minutes before the Super Bowl kicks off in Glendale’s University of Phoenix Stadium, some 45 miles away.
Organizers had considered moving the tourney to avoid conflict with the Super Bowl.
“We had a lot of discussion and analysis of that, and we decided this is the best thing for the FBR Open,” 2007 FBR Open tournament chairman Pat McGinley said Tuesday.
McGinley said organizers of the popular PGA Tour event are not concerned that their tournament will be swallowed up in the hype surrounding the Super Bowl.
“We think it only enhances what we’re doing,” he said. “The Valley will be the center of the sports universe.”
