Rick Tocchet Pleads Guilty

By fanster.com, May 25th, 2007 8:59 AM

Yesterday, there was speculation about why Rick Tocchet, one time assistant coach to the Phoenix Coyotes, would need to visit a courtroom in New Jersey about his involvement in “Operation Slapshot”. That speculation is over.

Tocchet pled guilty to conspiracy to promote gambling and promtoing gambling.

When asked if he bet on any hockey games, Tocchet said, “No.”

According to the Arizona Republic, phone calls to Janet Jones and Wayne Gretzky’s attorney were not returned. While Tocchet is expected to avoid jail time, New Jersey state trooper James Harney most likely will.

Many fans, including myself, wanted to see Tocchet back behind the bench after the departure of Barry Smith to Russia. With his guilty plea, I’m not sure if that will happen or not as it will be up to the NHL to determine his future career coaching the Coyotes.
