So yesterday we made the argument that Sarver shouldn’t be viewed as cheap and was getting a bum wrap. Well we spoke to soon and Suns nation let out a collective grown on Friday morning. While the trade of Kurt Thomas to the Sonics makes business sense it doesn’t make basketball sense. The Suns did save $16M buy trading KT, $8M on salary and $8M in luxury tax, but it also cost them their first round draft picks in 2008 and 2010. What did the Suns get back in return you ask? They got a conditional second round pick and an $8M dollar trade exemption. I really hope that $8M trade exemption is 7′ and can play some great defense come the playoffs because no one else will be able to guard Tim Duncan.
Phoenix bench now consists of Boris Diaw 6′ 8″, Leandro Barbosa 6′ 3″, D.J Strawberry 6′ 5″, Marcus Banks 6′ 2″, Alando Tucker 6′ 6″, Eric Piatkowski 6′ 6″ and Sean Marks 6′ 10″. Looking at that group either Amare Stoudemire is going to have to play 48 minutes a game or the Suns will be playing a lot of small ball with the tallest guy on the floor being 6′ 8″ and Shawn Marion playing out of position.
If you are hoping that the Suns and GM Steve Kerr will be picking up a free agent big man to fill KT’s spot for much cheaper……don’t hold your breath.
Kerr appeared on Xtra 910am Friday afternoon and stated that any big man that the Suns signed probably wouldn’t see much playing time and that Sean Marks would “surprise” fans this season. I’m pretty sure the only reason Suns fans will be surprised by Marks is that he isn’t in street clothes with his ass glued to the bench. It seems that Kerr is going against is claims while working for TNT that the Suns needed to get tougher and needed more front court contributors.
I guess that money talks and the man with the wallet…Uncle Money Bags….errrr… Robert Sarver prefers to line that wallet with 100’s instead of spending what it will take to get over the hump. If this team is truly about winning a championship then do whatever it takes and worry about the bottom line after the Larry O’Brien trophy resides in the valley. The Suns are inching towards a true corporate America view point of how to run a business. Soon they will have Steve Nash doing the work of 5 guys just to save money……oh wait that is what he does. Bring in PJ Brown or a big that can contribute or deal with a 40th straight season of disappointment.
If making money were the ultimate goal in the NBA then the Hawks and the Clippers would be the most successful franchises of all time.
