Randy Johnson is out for the 2007 season
This just in via a text message from KTAR.com. Randy Johnson is done for the 2007 season:

is done for the season and will have season-ending surgery a week from today in LA - Text message from KTAR.com

Well this just sucks. The Dbacks had hinted at this possiblity earlier in the week, but then he went on to throw a bullpen session and it looked as if RJ would be fine. Turns out that is not the case.

While this is a serious blow to the team, they can and have done just fine without him. Heck, they could even go out and get themselves another starting pitcher before the deadline. But man, not good news, if this is true.

The Unit was effective for us when he pitched, but am I out of line if I ask him to retire? If he does, the money we owe him doesn’t count against the Salary Cap, giving us about $14 million to go get another pitcher in the off-season…

You aren’t out of line but a bit miss guided. There is no such thing as a salary cap in baseball. The only budget restrictions on the Dbacks are all self imposed.
