On Friday, the Phoenix Coyotes begin a new affiliation agreement with the Arizona Sun Dogs based in Prescott Valley. As a result, the Phoenix Roadrunners, the former Coyotes affiliate, is searching for a new agreement with another NHL franchise.
Last season, the Sun Dogs were connected to the Colorado Avalanche and for them, it makes more sense to work with a team in the state of Arizona.
In terms of player and franchise development, the Sun Dogs have begun with a high level of success making the CHL playoffs in their inaugurial season and going as far as the Southern Conference semi-finals. The Roadrunners did not qualify for the playoffs in the 2006-2007 campaign.
I am not sure what the tipping point was for the Coyotes to not renew their affiliation with the Roadrunners and instead choose the Arizona Sun Dogs. However, the new agreement with the Sun Dogs will help continue the success of hockey in Northern Arizona.
As the year progresses, especially with our outstanding prospects within the Coyotes organization, I plan on following our development systems in more detail than I did last year. Therefore, when the prospects become Phoenix Coyotes, I will have a better idea about how they’ll play, and their strengths and weaknesses.
