Wickman Signs With D-backs

By Greg Esposito, September 7th, 2007 2:20 PM

According to azcentral.com relief pitcher Bob Wickman who was cut by the Atlanta Braves after converting 20 of 26 save opportunities has signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the remainder of the season. Wickman was 3-3 with a 3.92 ERA in 42 appearances.

His addition should help a bullpen that has hit a few bumps in the road as of late. Juan Cruz left after a few pitches the other night and Tony Pena has been up and down as of late so Wickman could provide some additional stability for the stretch run. You have to question why Bobby Cox would let a guy like Bob get away unless he was a clubhouse problem and that is the last thing the D-backs need right now. If he doesn’t disturb the balance in the clubhouse this is a big thumbs up for Josh Byrnes and the front office.

Since Wickman was signed after September 1st he will not be eligible for the Playoff roster.

** UPDATE ** Pitcher Enrique Gonzalez has been cut from the 40-man roster to make room for Wickman.
