The Arizona Wildcats Are Number One In Pac-10
That’s right we are talking about Arizona Wildcats football and being number one in the Pac-10. Obviously we aren’t talking about the product on the field (we are homers but we aren’t stupid). We are talking about in the stands. The Wildcats have the largest streak of none winning seasons, no, they have the largest student section in the Pac-10 and one of the largest in the entire nation.
We’re not sure whether to be proud of the UofA faithful or to shake our heads at the students down in the old pueblo. Arizona averages 11,000 students in the “Zona Zoo”. 11,000 students for a team who hasn’t been to a bowl since 1998 and has been less then mediocre since then.
Lets compare the 11,000 to other students sections in the Pac-10:
USC-9,000
ASU-9,000
Washington-7,000
UCLA- 6,000
OSU- 6,000
Oregon- 5,670
Stanford-3,500
This must be bizarro world because USC is a perennial national title contender and some how the Cats out draw them in the student. So much for a home field advantage though. Since 2002 they are only 10-17 in home games an impressively bad .370 winning percentage. That’s right they win 37% of the time for the “Zona Zoo” at least thats higher then most of the students in the section got in their gen ed science class.
At $60 a student the athletic department is laughing all the way to the bank as they make $660,000 while putting a losing product on the field. Not bad at all as it almost pays for the entire $800,000 salary of Mike Stoops. I wonder if that means since the students are paying for most of his salary if they get to help Jim Livengood decide when to fire Stoops. Probably not but lets hope Stoops and his Cats step up so fans have no reason to call for his head.
Also it is always nice to be better then ASU in something when it involves football. Not that the 9,000 students at Fork-U make any noise. Sun Devil Law #432 get there by midway through the first quarter, be quiet and leave by the third.
