Coyotes Make Roster Cuts; Winnik Makes an Impression

By fanster.com, September 22nd, 2007 9:00 AM

The Phoenix Coyotes sent 19 players to its affiliate the San Antonio Rampage yesterday, which brings the total number of those in camp to 31.

Notable among the players assigned to the Rampage is David LeNeveu, the Coyotes second round draft pick (46th overall) in 2002. LeNeveu was the one time back up to Curtis Joseph before losing his job last season to Mike Morrison, who is no longer in the system.

With strong performances by all three goalies, David Aebischer, Alex Auld, and Mikael Tellqvist, LeNeveu was once again the odd man out.

In other training camp news, centerman Daniel Winnik has made an excellent impression on the Coyotes coaching staff. After seeing his performances in the two games against the Toronto Maple Leafs, I would have to agree. He scored a goal in the 3-2 loss against the Maple Leafs in Winnipeg and has skated very well ever since. He has a very good shot at making the team.

The Dallas Stars come to town after their rumble with the Colorado Avalanche where the Stars lost 6-3. Head coach Wayne Gretzky had the following to say about tonight’s contest, “We know Dallas is a really good hockey club, and we want to make sure teams know when they play against us we’re going to be a team that’s gonna play fast, play rough, as well as play physical.”

David Aebischer will get the start. After a strong outing against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday by stopping 17 out of 18 shots, he now has just two other netminders to compete against for the two goaltending positions.
