AZ Republic Article: Glendale Arizona Residents Renting Homes For Super Bowl XLII
Super Bowl can be a super deal for homeowners

Last January, Glendale residents got their first real experience at renting homes to out-of-town guests during major sports events.
Some were successful during the Fiesta Bowl and BCS title game. Others were not.
When Super Bowl XLII rolls around in February, Glendale residents trying to rent their homes will face stiff competition from homeowners across the Valley.
An ad at superbrentals.com shows a four-bedroom home in Waddell going for $8,500 for the week. Asking price on a two-bedroom home in Phoenix’s historic Willo District, 16 miles from University of Phoenix Stadium, is $36,500 for the week.
Of course, Glendale has the ultimate rental plus: location.
That’s what homeowners like Tom Traw are banking on. He and his family have four properties advertised.
While some residents oppose their neighbors’ renting their homes temporarily to visitors, the city has no prohibitions.
And residents like Traw are capitalizing on Glendale’s new reputation as a sports and entertainment destination city.
The 45-year resident and Realtor, who moved here to be in the country and remembers a time when sheep stopped traffic outside his 83rd Avenue home, is making the best of the $455 million dome that opened last year a football toss away from his home.
“For living in the country, it’s not good anymore,” Traw said. “But for business, it’s real good.”
He hopes to rent his guesthouse a mile from University of Phoenix Stadium during Super Bowl week for a mere $10,000.
It’s just 1,000 square feet, but visitors can hoof it to the dome if traffic strikes any resemblance to the backup in Miami at the 2007 Super Bowl.
Additionally, for $15,000 each, Traw will temporarily relocate tenants (and give them two months’ free rent) to make room for visitors at his two rental properties.
And for $25,000, his daughter will let out-of-towners stay at her large, custom home near the stadium.
With 100 days until Super Bowl XLII, more than 100 enterprising homeowners already have ads at craiglist.org, one of many online rental sites.
But does it work?
It has for Traw. The Glendale resident and Realtor leased his guesthouse for $3,000 a week for the Fiesta Bowl and BCS title game in January.
“That was nice money,” Traw said.
He based Super Bowl rates on asking prices in Florida for this year’s game.
Some Super Bowl host cities have struggled to find adequate hotel rooms, but Arizona hoteliers predict no shortage with more than 55,000 rooms to tap.
The Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee, which takes no position on home rentals, has reserved 19,000 hotel rooms for players, corporate sponsors and others.
Many Super Bowl-goers are corporate types who have paid big money for tickets and expect amenities. And some homeowners say they can offer the kind of pampering such guests require.
Dave Moskowitz has reserved tables at high-end restaurants and a limo. He will toss in Suns tickets and admission to the FBR Open. He can also offer maid service and penthouse views from the 21st floor of his Summit at Copper Square property in downtown Phoenix.
Asking price? $100,000 for the week.
