Nine New Year’s Wishes…

December 31st, 2007

besides the usual stuff like world peace, and me being thinner, better organized and more gainfully employed. (Being 52, I find those things make better wishes than resolutions, she said, as she munched on some halvah while typing this.)

I wish…

1. it were March 31 instead of Dec. 31.

2. for me to go to all the Diamondbacks vs. Giants games in San Francisco.

3. for Eric Byrnes to hit .317 (200 hits in 630 AB’s) with 30 homers, 50 doubles, 100 RBI, 110 runs scored, 50 stolen bases (with at least an 85% success rate) and 60 walks in 2008.

4. for Eric’s 200 hits to be evenly distributed throughout the season so that we don’t see the weak August and September we saw last year.

5. for Eric Byrnes to be picked for the All-Star team.

6. for Eric to get a hit and make a put out in the All-Star game.

7. for the Diamondbacks to win the World Series.

8. for Eric Byrnes to be the MVP of the World Series.

9. for me to see a World Series game live. (I’ve been to a couple of playoff games in my day, but never the Series).

Happy New Year, Everyone!

A tribute to the Cardinals 8-8 season…Here is to next year!

December 31st, 2007

The Cardinals season may have closed out yesterday, but Ken Whisenhunt has finally brought this team to the next level. 8-8 was better than even we could have predicted. With a good offseason, add some depth, this team will go to the playoffs next year. The Cardinals go 8-8

Colorado Year End Bash

December 31st, 2007

Hopefully we can end 2007 on a high note with a win against Colorado.

Missing Joe Sakic may be causing a bit of an emotional toll on the Avs. They lost to the Kings in their last outing and are 6-10-2 whan away from their home ice. Hopefully we can add to their loss column with some feisty play.

We absolutely need to find a PP tonight. The Avs are fair to middlin on the PK (I think we can take ‘em!) Budaj should be in net but he has been having an on again off again season (unlike last year when he was way hot).

The VHS line needs to pick it up (Vbrat came thru last night, lets hope Handz and Sjo can get their groove on tonight). At least 2 other committee members need to step up. If the blue can put it on net with a bit more authority I think this should turn our way. Its time for the blue to start contributing, we been riding Bryz!’s back too long with sporadic contributions from various suspects and no ‘real’ 1st line dependable money guys.

I think this game comes down to our blueliners leading the charge and some brave souls paying the price in the slot to get the garbage. Ever since Weller has been out we haven’t gotten that big screening presence in front and it has hurt.

Watch out for Small Paul Stasny and the ever dangerous Hejduk as usual and Handy Andy Brunette is no slouch at chippin ‘em in either. Smith and Wolski should be fairly easy to set up against, we got guys with the same tools who can match them. Screen the hell out of Budaj and shell him til he staggers.

Let’s Go Coyotes!

Some Avs Stuff: http://blogs.denverpost.com/avs/2007/12/30/ebayblood-feud-alert-and-other-musings-from-a-chain-hotel-in-phoenix/

Oooh they really don’t have good luck w/ Bryz! : http://www.denverpost.com/avalanche/ci_7845555

Wings N Things

December 31st, 2007

Well poop! We did it again. Found a way to lose. We found a way to get ahead of the Ded again… and then we found a way to give the game right back to them.

I’m actually not too disappointed. It was a great game. Chances all around, hustle for the most part by everybody, pretty good net minding and we hung with what is possibly the best team in the NHL (right now) for 55 minutes.

Follow the leader

Dats is simply sick! The guy has more moves than a sidewinder on a slip n slide. He creates things out of nothing every time he hits the ice. If it hadn’t been for the diligence and smarts of our hustling D that boy woulda handed us our helmets several times over.

We got some fairly good shots this game (34 of them with many more ‘quality’ shots than last game). We were even on the hitting at 19 for each team. Our face offs were abysmal at only 41%. And of course we failed to capitalize on the PPs goin 0 - 4 as usual. But at least this time we had some energy and chances on a few of them, unlike last game.

Highlights of the evening: Jovo finally getting a goal! I should talk bad about him more often it seems. Maybe now that he copped his 100th goal we will see more tallies from him. Still pretty impressed with Lisin’s game. And of course Vbrat! Drawing the penalty shot was awesome. (In 16 years of hockey I had NEVER seen a live penalty shot!) And man was it pretty. Vrbata-boom, Vrbata-bing indeed! Ozzie bit on that forhand fake like a Krispy Kreme and Vbrat gave him a sweet, high back hand. (and gave us the lead which also made me very happy)

Then the refs decided to even up the penalties a bit. (no the refs weren’t horrible) but man those penalties were sure weak. Well the Bally one was deserved but the Doaner one was just silly as Ozzie was reachin out when Doan floated by (Ozzie was barely brushed). But oh well… can’t be a fan without bitchin at least once about the officiating.

Doan 1

The rest of the game was pretty even through til the last 5 minutes of the third. Thats when the Wings dug down into that ‘other’ gear they have and momentum and the tenor of the game swung permanently over to their side. Datsyuk decided he’d had enough of his coverage and simply dusted our boys on his way to see Bryz! about the go ahead goal. And try as hard as we did we couldn’t get it back. (I really thought we might for a few minutes) but then we pulled Bryz (with only one D man on the ice…and that D man was Jovo) I knew the empty netter was comin. Soory but its true… all snipers and only Jovo is sooo not pretty. Need at least one hustler (Niko?) or another D with a big shot (DMo?) out there when you are playin a team like the Ded.

Reinprecht takes the puck

Final score 4 - 2. Again we cut down the score and get closer to a solution. We get one more shot at these boys and do pretty well against them on their turf.

Guest from the radio show was the big PM. Mueller is as sweet as they come. Gettin used to his rockstar status. Like many of the rookies this season (the Yotes finally set up some support for the baby Yotes) Mules lives with Maloney and family while he finds his feet here in Phoenix. I hope they found a good place for Enver to stay cuz he probably misses Tordjman (who had taken him under his wing in SA).

Sports shows have big plans for Super Bowl XLII in Arizona

Sports shows have big plans for Super Bowl

Randy Cordova
The Arizona Republic
Dec. 30, 2007 12:00 AM

When the Super Bowl comes to town, it brings a media circus with it. The networks will be sending their big guns to the Valley to cover the game, plus all the festivities that go along with it.

That means opportunities will abound for Valley fans who’d love to impress their pals by popping up in the background of their favorite sports shows.

Super Bowl XLII will be covered by such familiar sports broadcasting faces as Terry Bradshaw, Bob Costas and Dan Marino.

Even mainstream Hollywood will get into the act, with famed metrosexual Ryan Seacrest conducting red-carpet interviews at University of Phoenix Stadium for Fox before the big game starts Feb. 3.

This slice of glitz is a first for the Super Bowl, but Seacrest has proven he can host more than American Idol, having filled the role for the Emmy Awards and taken his share of ribbing in the process.

Among the notable shows coming to the Valley over Super Bowl week are:

Fox Sports
As the host network for the 2008 game, Fox can be expected to dominate game-day coverage and to be a strong contender in the week heading up to the game.

Portions of several Fox shows will be taped in the Valley, including FSN Final Score, Fox NFL Sunday and The OT. The Best Damn Sports Show Period will broadcast live from the Bird’s Nest of the FBR Open in Scottsdale on Jan. 28-Feb. 1.

If you have $300 to spare, the Best Damn Super Bowl Party Period will feature a performance by Ludacris and hosting duties courtesy of Rodney and Holly Robinson Peete and Jenny McCarthy.

The party will be held Jan. 31 at the exclusive Rockridge Estate compound, according to the network Web site, which says to expect such celebrities as Jessica Alba, Paris Hilton, Marshall Faulk, Marcus Allen, Warren Moon, Alex Rodriquez, Jason Giambi, Coco Crisp, Jeremy Piven, Vida Guerra, Brooke Burke, Kim Kardashian and Travis Barker. (Details: www.bestdamnsuperbowlpartyperiod.com) The bash will benefit the Peetes’ HollyRod Foundation.

On Feb. 3, Fox will cover the game, with NFL Sunday’s Bradshaw, Jimmy Johnson, Howie Long, Troy Aikman and Curt Menefee doing commentary. Joe Buck will be the play-by-play announcer, with Pam Oliver and Chris Myers reporting from the sidelines.

Prior to the game, Seacrest will host the red-carpet arrival of various celebrities.

It’s another example of cross-promoting: movie studios that buy spots during the Super Bowl will be able to have their films’ stars parade on the carpet and get the interview treatment from Seacrest, a form of video double-dipping.

HBO
Inside the NFL with Costas and company will tape a show Jan. 29 from the game on the roof of the Glendale Media Center parking garage near University of Phoenix Stadium. The stadium is off Loop 101 and Maryland Avenue.

NFL Network
The league’s cable network will broadcast from a variety of locations throughout the week, including the NFL Experience theme park outside the stadium, the NFC and AFC hotels, the Phoenix Convention Center and University of Phoenix Stadium.
(It is also notable that the NFL network will be replaying past Super Bowl games through out the month of January, 2008)

ESPN

The sports network was unable to confirm any Valley locations but reportedly is considering a set on the pedestrian bridge in the Scottsdale Waterfront’s SouthBridge, shopping and entertainment district. Expect such shows as NFL Countdown, NFL Live and Jim Rome Is Burning to be broadcasting on location.

Like Fox, ESPN is in a partying mood and will hold a private bash at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts on Feb. 1. No word yet on which celebs will be attending.

CNN
The cable news network will tape several segments in the Valley. It will have crews stationed at the Desert Botanical Gardens in east Phoenix at the start of Super Bowl week, Jan 28-Feb. 1, and then at the Glendale Media Center on Feb. 2-4.

Sullivan better than Carpenter? HELL NO

December 31st, 2007

You've got to be kidding me. People are jumping ship on Carpenter after a couple of bad outings and are calling for backup Danny Sullivan to compete for the starting job when spring camp begins in March. Arrogant? Yes. Erratic and unconventional? Guilty. But Sullivan is NOT better than Carpenter, and to declare him so after a good stint of mop up duty in awfully harsh.

Danny Sullivan had moderate success during mop-up duty in the Holiday bowl. He went 7-14 for 118 yards with a pick and a score, which is ok but not job promotion good. Besides, Texas had softened their coverage, playing a bit of umbrella/prevent passing defense, which we all know doesn't work. In other action this season, he stepped in to the UCLA game and turned a nearly locked-up game into a nail biter by fumbling the ball away to the Bruin defense. That fumble was no fluke, if you watch tape on Sullivan he (just guessing here) probably fumbled in more than half of his career appearances. As previously noted on this site, the ball won't give you cancer, Danny.

Paying little mind to the Holiday Bowl, Carpenter is 21-10 as ASU's starter and is on track to break school records in career games won, passing touchdowns, and passing yards. He is taking entirely too much blame for ASU's three losses, when in fact he should be given credit for carrying the offense after losing one of the Pac-10's top running backs in Ryan Torain and surviving that abysmal pass blocking.

Rudy Carpenter is one of the top quarterbacks in the Pac-10, a conference known for producing top-notch quarterbacks. Based on returning starters for 2008, it's hard to say he won't be an all-conference selection heading into next season. It's probably still too early for Jake locker, and don't try to sell me that Tuitama lemon. Ok, maybe Longshore, but is that something you want to gamble away by putting your faith in a backup with zero starts and fewer that 40 career passing attempts over two years?

Carpenter is definitely a polarizing figure, and another quarterback competition/controversy could prove detrimental to team unity, especially this early in Erickson's tenure. A promising 2006 team never got a chance after the Sam Keller switcheroo incident finishing a very meh 7-6, and the suggestion of Carpenter splitting practice reps with Sullivan would likely lead the Sun Devils down the same path. those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. You don't lose your job going into your senior season. An ASU coach tried that once, and it blew up in his face eventually costing him his job. The suggestion is ludicrous, and Rudy has proven himself on the field. He gives his all on every play and he's a fiery competitor that should be leading ASU in the Pac-10 title hunt next season.

Sullivan better than Carpenter? HELL YES

December 31st, 2007

Danny Sullivan stepped in to the Holiday Bowl against Texas' starting defense and marched the Sun Devils down the field for two scores, throwing 7-14 for 118 yards including going 5-5 on his first drive. He's had some serious butterfingers his entire collegiate career but he showed all of us on Thursday that he's capable of running this team. He obviously possesses a stronger arm that Carpenter, and he's able to throw the ball with zip in addition to airing it out on the long bombs. Sullivan appeared to have better field vision (being taller helps), and for someone with so little game experience he did a good job of making his progressions and reads without locking on to a single receiver, something Carpenter is guilty of doing every so often. Despite being bigger, Sullivan isn't the concrete-footed sloth we're used to seeing in the maroon and gold pocket. (see Walter, Andrew and Keller, Sam) In fact, he looked far more elusive than the smaller Carpenter. Remember how early on in the season Carpenter's mobility was supposed to be a strength? My how times change.

The most important and noticeable difference between Carpenter and Sullivan in the Holiday Bowl is that Sullivan seems to be able to lead receivers on passing routes, which is what Erickson/Olson's offense is designed to do. If you look at the delicious 41-9 Fiesta Bowl massacre of Notre Dame, Erickson's Oregon State team burned the Irish secondary with catch and runs by Chad Johnson and TJ Hooshmazoo. Carpenter's receivers always seem to be leaping, diving, and contorting themselves to make spectacular catches where they immediately fall to the ground or out of bounds. As a former hockey goalie, I was taught that the spectacular saves you see on NHL 2Night were the result of the goaltender being out of position, not because of some sort of freakish skill. If he were in position, the save would have been made in lackluster fashion, the puck would have been covered, and a faceoff would have ensued. Dominick Hasek was the exception, but any goalie coach will tell you to never watch Hasek for technique. Where was I? Oh yes, leading the receivers. Chris McGaha is an incredible athlete- he won a slam dunk contest in high school- his athletic ability would be on some serious display if he was able to catch and run rather than snare all of Rudy's over/underthrown balls. Kyle Williams has Shaun MacDonald explosiveness (not hands, obviously) and pre-injury Brandon Smith (remember him?) was garnering comparisons to Chad Johnson in fall camp. Hard to say what Mike Jones can do since he usually runs out routes, but you don't play Pac-10 football and baseball by being a slouch. All four of these guys return next season, along with athletic Kerry Taylor and Nate Kimbrough. It would be nice to take advantage of them.

And finally, I'm not hanging out with the players but Carpenter seems like a locker room cancer and his rumored smack talking coupled with the sideline tirades are embarrassing our school. I hate to say it, but he looks like a budding Mike Stoops. The offensive line hasn't been great this year, but not everyone responds well to being called out in front of 71,000 people. There's a reasonable possibility that the pass blocking wasn't that great on purpose. Despite the negative attention another QB controversy would bring to ASU, it's time for an open competition under center.

Suns end year with win no. 22 in Sacramento

December 31st, 2007

STAT v. the Kings(AP Photo/Steve Yeater) The ingredients for a Suns victory these days: A big game by Stoudemire (31 points, 17 rebound), a bunch of assists from Nash (15), a solid game by Marion (25 points, 10-of-16 from the field) and the usual scoring off the bench from Barbosa (22 points).

That was the game last night in Sacramento resulting in a 117-102 Phoenix win as the Suns just keep running over those “not so good” basketball teams.

The Kings, without their best players out due to injuries (Mike Bibby, Kevin Martin and Ron Artest), tried to stay in the game and did it for the most part. Sacramento was indeed just three points down (99-96) late in the game before the Suns went on a 12-0 run that basically closed the affair. Garcia scored 30 points while Salmons added 23 and Moore had 20 with 12 rebounds for the Kings.

Coach D’Antoni perfectly summed up the game: ”They were short handed and we took advantage of it. But they played hard and didn’t quit.”

Three-point shooting proved to be the difference in the game as the Suns shot a good 11-for-27 (40%) while the Kings were just 5-for-23 from beyond the arch.

The Suns continue to win games on the road (13-6) and end the 2007 portion of the season with a good 22-9 record and the most wins in the Western Conference.

Phoenix will open the new year with four consecutive home games hosting the Sonics on Thursday night (8:30 PM) on TNT.

Speaking of which, I really hope 2008 will be a happy and Sunny year for everyone.

Happy New Year Folks!

Yours truly, Steve Fan

Post-Holiday Bowl Questions and Observations

December 30th, 2007

I attended the Holiday Bowl after attaining tickets last minute. Some observations after attending the game.

1) ASU came out of the locker room to start this game with absolutely no energy. It reminded me of the 2004 game at USC when we were undefeated going in. It was a game to prove ourselves and we we're out of the game from the get-go. This game was much the same. I was sitting over on the Texas side during the first half, and their whole team was hooting and hollering the entire first half, while I looked over to the Sun Devil sidelines where the players had their arms crossed and were just standing around listless. It seemed like some of our players just wanted to get home and play Wii Tennis.

2) Carpenter took a lot of flak from the fans even though this was a team loss. Colt McCoy obviously outplayed him, but the offensive line gave another performance reminiscent of the 2002 Houston Texans. His thumb is obviously not healed, so a lot of the fans who are calling for Sullivan to replace him need to wait and see what happens in Spring ball.
Needless to say though, after severely missing receivers on key plays (Brent Miller on 4th down, the underthrown interception to McGaha late that sealed the Texas victory), Sullivan needs to be given a fair look in the offseason. With how talented our receivers are, the Sun Devils need a quarterback who can throw the ball deep with some zip. Some of those balls Carpenter threw looked like they were filled with helium, taking way too long to get to their target. Hopefully, with a successful recovery to his throwing hand, Carpenter can regain the pass efficiency we saw earlier in the season.

3) Chris McGaha is a great possession receiver. He was covered pretty well on that 4th down touchdown catch, and if he doesn't come up with that I might have been tempted to catch the trolley back to the Santa Fe Depot a little earlier than I did.

4) I'm interested to see how Kyle Williams will play in his final two seasons. With Rudy Burgess graduating, Williams needs to step up and be a team leader next season. After botching that punt return late and subsequently throwing a tantrum when he got back to the sideline, his character comes into question a little bit. If I had a helmet on in the stands, I probably would have thrown it down in disgust too after the way our team had been playing, but with Williams becoming a junior next season some of the younger guys are going to start looking to him for leadership. Just hope he can keep a cool head in the future, because everyone makes mistakes and it wont be his last one.

5) Our line backers and corners need to learn how to defend the screen pass a little better. The first screen of the game was covered well by Justin Tryon, but they killed us with the screen the rest of the game. USC found this out, and used it against us, and Texas used it as well. Georgia is usually deep at tight end and running back, and if we're going to have a chance at beating them next year we have to figure out how to defend those short passes. Our corners just flat out need to learn how to tackle better.

6) I think we'll be good next season at stopping the run. Even though we're losing Robert James and Michael Marquardt, I think we'll be just as good at stopping the run with David Smith, Jon Hargis and Tank English plugging up the middle. Our linebacker core will miss James, but Nixon, Goethel, Munns are all coming back and shouldn't miss a beat. Best of luck to James and Marquardt at the next level.

7) Texas running back Jamaal Charles will probably skip his senior season and go right to the pros. His agent just needs to show scouting directors game tape from the Holiday Bowl. He played his way into the first day of the draft most likely.

8) Getting to the quarterback. Colt McCoy had all day to find the open man. Dexter Davis was completely shut down, and Luis Vasquez was the only D-Lineman to come away with a sack. They combined their efforts for 16 sacks this season, but the Vasquez sack in the Holiday Bowl was the only one the duo came away with in our 3 losing efforts this season.

Any observations you guys have, please post them into the comments section.

Devils Cruise 95-56

December 30th, 2007

ASU continued it's winning ways on Saturday with an easy win over St. Francis (PA) to move its record to 10-2 heading into Pac-10 play. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the game because I'm out of town so I'll leave it to the ASU Media Relations to give you the recap.

The Devils' 3-point shooting has continued to be a strength and Ty Abbott is emerging as a reliable scoring option along with James Harden and Jeff Pendergraph. Herb Sendek has also moved Derek Glasser into the starting point guard position.

I'll be back Thursday for the Oregon game and hopefully will have a new podcast up soon.

Super Bowl Mike: SuperBowl XLI Colts vs. Bears

December 30th, 2007

super-bowl-mike.JPG

Super Bowl XLI Colts vs. Bears

We slept until about 12:30pm until Thom decided he wanted something to eat. Again, this sounded like a good idea at the time. So we headed down to Flannigan’s to get a burger. After the night before I couldn’t even look at beer. Don and Stephen ordered a beer and were ready to go. I took about 3 bites out of my burger and was ready to sleep at the bar. I went into the men’s room, had a couple of dry heaves and knew I had to get some more sleep. We went back to “the pit” and slept until 5:00pm. Now I was ready to go watch the Super Bowl. Just before we left we asked the strippers where their club was, we got directions and said we would see them after the game.

The Super Bowl was all right; we took the underdogs and were rooting for the Bears. We wore our Patriots jerseys and had fun yelling choke every time Adam Vinatieri took the field. Although there were some Colts fans there, the bar wasn’t too loud. I think they may have been afraid to cheer, because once the game was over it seemed everyone there was a Colts fan. We wrapped the weekend up with a trip to the strip club. This was the first strip club I have gone too in a couple of years. I have to start doing a little research to see where we will end up at 2:00am in Phoenix. Sometime between my last visit and this one it became the in thing to have women go to strip clubs. How the heck did I miss that? I believe our two friends from the hotel were “hired” out again, because they never showed up to work. Not that we hadn’t already seen them naked at the hotel, but I was still hoping for a free dance for the ride Saturday night.

So as I sat in the Tampa airport, waiting for the connecting flight to Manchester, I started looking at hotels for Arizona for the 2008 Super Bowl Party. Hopefully I have made enough connections that I get an invitation to the 2008 Penthouse Super Bowl Party because THAT is the place to be if you are going to the Super Bowl. It doesn’t matter if you have tickets to the big game or not (well yes it does), save your money and invest it in that party because it will be a better show than the Super Bowl itself!

So as I start to plan the trip to Phoenix, I want to know where are the hot hangouts, where the true football fans party and what events will be the best of Super Bowl weekend 2008! Send me an e-mail at superbowlmike@azsuperbowlblog.com let me know where I should be headed in the Phoenix, Glendale, Sun City area.

How To Make A Bowl Loss Bearable…. Get Engaged!

December 29th, 2007

McGaha
chrismcgaha1.jpegASU wide receiver Chris McGaha, 21, proposed to his girlfriend of 3 years on Christmas day, just days before the Sun Devils got blown out by Texas in the Holiday bowl. When McGaha told friends he planned to propose in San Diego, they said he should take a cue from Boise State running back Ian Johnson, who popped the question to his girlfriend, cheerleader Chrissy Popadics, after their Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma last January.

” ‘I can’t be a copycat,’ McGaha said.

Instead, he took McCloe for a walk along the harbor at sunset Tuesday, got down on one knee and popped the question. Afterward, they took a carriage ride to celebrate.

‘It was a good week,’ McGaha said.”

Yeah, awesome week. I can’t think of anything better. Get embarrassed in front of a national audience in the bowl game that you were pissed about being demoted to in the first place, and sealing the deal on being suffocated for the rest of your life at the ripe age of 21. Wait, wait, wait…. I am being negative and judgmental. Getting married, jumping yourself into the biggest commitment ever at 21, and waking up to the same face for the next 75 years until the sweet release of death, is THE biggest joy in life I’ve heard. SO sweeeeeet to hear. The only thing that could make it better is to start popping out kids ASAP, Britney Spears style.

Because I Needed A Suns Refresher

December 29th, 2007

Suns Training Camp Goof Off!

Take a minute to forget the Suns struggles this year and watch this video at Suns training camp on the Arizona campus. My fellow UAers take some time to embarrass themselves and make me proud. I am pretty upset that I couldn’t be there to help. Mike D’Antoni even makes fun of his Adam Morrison interviewer when he offers to treat him to Olive Garden. I would’ve offered him Fazoli’s fast food Italian, if he was lucky. That stuff is good - dinner under $5. And they use real lard. Can’t beat that.

AZSH talks D-backs, Cards and Devils on 1060

December 29th, 2007

Rudy Carpenter for Heisman?
Each week AZ Sports Hub teams up with Calling All Sports Saturdays on 1060 AM The Fan for a segment talking nothing but Arizona Sports. With no show this week due to all of us being out of town at the same time, we wanted to post up our belated episode from last week…Enjoy:
