Post Xmas day blahs? or special teams blecchhs?
We out shot ‘em. (48-28) We out hit ‘em. (23-11) We out face-offed ‘em. (yeah I know that ain’t no word). (34-23) How the hell did we not win this game? Two words…special teams. Our PK did absolutely diddley squat. Last year I pointed out how bad an idea a 4/44 pairing was. Well TGO, it STILL is! 2 of 3 PP goals scored on the 4/44 pairing. and the 3rd one? Yep on 44 again. Common denominator/coincidence? the number 44. Lesson? Use any Dman you got on the PK except Boynk. Hardly fair you say? Well I happen to love Boynk but facing factoids has to be done my friends. Now of course all the blame can’t be placed on the shoulders of one guy so let’s move on shall we?
Ed Jovonavski (some refer to him not so affectionately as Special Ed). Tonight he was somethin special alright. The guy could not hold onto a puck to save his life. Turn over, after turn over, after…well, turnover. I was not sure whether to be embarrassed for him or by him. My god! What the hell happens to Big Ed when he gets on home ice? On the road he plays like he actually understands angles and has hand eye coordination… at home? blueline turnover terrorist. I have been supportin his play (in spite of the many naysayers all season) after last night, I may just give up. Simply awful for most of his shifts. Maybe he needs a wee bit of a break in playing time? We got 7 Dmen right now, maybe its time for Jovo to take a small rest?
Finally TGO calls out the turn overs! Maybe TGO sees it too? “We had too many guys on the power play turning the puck over and giving pucks away,” he said. “Our power play was horrendous tonight, and again people expect to be on the power play every single night and every game, but we’re not getting results, so young guys are gonna score and get opportunities, and I’m gonna play them, simple as that.” Thank the hockey gods! Cause quite frankly the cycle the puck to Jovo scheme suxs!
So to continue. Gabby didn’t get loose much
Bally played him like a flute most of the night. The 2/53 combo is still firing on all cylinders (goin up against most of the opposition’s top lines game after game ain’t the easiest job in the world). Most of the other matchups went quite well too.
Joel P showed off his skills with a real nice goal 
and Enver ‘the Russian Motor’ Lisin drew a couple of penalties with his speed and then managed to pot the only even strength goal of the night.
Envy’s goal put us within striking distance with 2+ minutes to spare but even with the extra man, we couldn’t manage the tie.
Well, much like the Sharks, we get closer and closer. Maybe the next time we win.
