Keepin the Joker Contained - Wild Preview

December 26th, 2007

Hmmm… last time we met we were just gettin our legs under us in understanding that we can compete with the best.

So we enter this contest with confidence in the net guardian, a really gelled blueline and a scoring committee that can match any set of shooters in the NHL (on any given night).

But the Wild have a joker in their midst. A healthy Gabby can make all bets null and void. The key to this game won’t be slippin past a recovering Backstrum in the net ( the team that ate Brodeur’s lunch is a lot less worried about findin cookis in Backstrum’s kitchen) nor will it be keepin away from the Boogeyman (we won’t start no static so there shouldn’t be no static… Ballard! don’t taunt the Boogeyman!) if Boogaard does start anything it will be very obvious to the refs who went lookin for trouble and we could really use a 5 minute PP. It will be a simple game of containment and fighting speed w/ speed.

Sjo and TQ and the blue will have to play Gabby like a second skin all night long. One stride and that boy is a thousand miles away son. We didn’t let him have much last game (he took one anyway but 1 is better than the 5 he shoved down the Rangers throats) and I hope we give him even less room to roam in this match. The rest of the Wild are more evenly matched, dangerous to be sure but much more matchable per shift.

As to matching speed for speed, Enver Lisin may get to see some ice time on Thursday night. That kid has wheels to spare and if his numbers in SA are any indication, Envy has found out where the net is and can get there at will (he also seems to have found out what defense means). Between Sjo and Enver there is a whole lotta motor purrin under the Coyote hood and they just might make the difference this time. Of course the rest of the scoring committe just might make them a moot point. Vbrat and the blueline are due (Z finally finding his wrister could make this game a whole lot more interesting).

**WDYT? - TGO has not thrown Ziggy out on the ice in quite a few games. Now calling up Lisin makes it even more challenging for Zig to break back in. With the Yotie pups givin up fewer and fewer PPs, the PK shut down guys are going to have to find something else to contribute to the mix if they want to get some TOI… or even get into the game. (this fact added to the ridin the hot lines metality means a tough road to hoe for Zig and possibly Wellie to get back into the line up)**

Let’s go Coyotes!

EDIT: oh oh! Dallas just ran through the Wild like a bad bean burrito… hope they don’t recover. But more than likely they are so embarassed they will try to take it out on us. Look for a very peeved Demitra and a quick lil snake named Voros to try to make up for this 8 - 3 Dallas massacre.

Santa is a Laker! LA beat Phoenix 122-115

December 26th, 2007

Kobe v. the Suns(Richard Hartog / Los Angeles Times) The Lakers, a quickly developing young team, ruined Christmas on Planet Orange with an impressive 122-115 win over the Suns.

It was Kobe leading the way, a game-high 38 points, but it was Bynum doing most of the damage. Andrew, under the keen look of his Hall of Fame mentor Kareem Abdul Jabbar, was spectacular: 28 points, 11-of-13 shooting, and 12 rebounds.

Kobe, like MJ used to do, turned it up in the third quarter and scored 26 points in the second half and added 7 assists. Bell and Marion did a decent job defending on Bryant actually.

The Suns had seven players scoring in double figures led by Nash’s 24 points (and 14 assists). Stoudemire scored 19 points, Marion and Bell had 15, Hill added 14, Barbosa and Skinner 10 each off the bench. Brian Skinner played over 22 minutes and is quickly become a big part in the Suns rotation.

The key to the Suns loss was, I believe, inside defense.

Stoudemire looked confused - often late and out of position - on defense most of the time and the Suns were much better defensively with Skinner and Diaw on the field.

Coach D’Antoni tried to play with two centers in the lineup to limit the Lakers’ rebounding supremacy and their ability to find the open men in the paint off penetrations. That worked, to some extent, on defense but limited the Suns quickness on offense.

The Suns (19-9, 3-5 in the last eight games) haven’t won back to back games since December 7th and are just a game ahead of these up-and-coming Lakers.

The Suns will be back in LA, this time to play the Clippers, on Thursday Dec. 27th (8:30 PM).

Yours truly, Steve Fan

Super Bowl Mike: Friday night in Miami before Super Bowl XLI

December 26th, 2007

super-bowl-mike.JPG

Friday night in Miami

Friday night we headed into South Beach. The host city usually does a pretty good job of shutting down a couple of blocks so there can be a centralized party area. Bars up and down the strip trying to draw in everyone they can.

There were a few private parties, but I had started too late to find all the good ones. Now would be a good time to tell everyone if you know of some hot parties in Phoenix send me an e-mail at superbowlmike@azsuperbowlblog.com and save me six seats at the bar!

We started to head back thinking maybe we would go to bed early. Well we were on the highway and saw a billboard for the Hard Rock Café, and realized it was a casino too. So we hit the casino at the Hard Rock Café at 1:00am. I hit the slots well enough that I had a little extra drinking money.

It was a little weird a few weeks later when we saw that was the hotel where they found Anna Nicole. I have no idea if she was there during the super bowl, but it was a pretty hopping place even at 1:00am.

We decided to quit while we were ahead, so we headed back to the pit around 2:30am. It was a pretty mellow night, but we still ended up drinking at Denny’s at 3:00am. You think I would have learned my lesson, but nope..ordered the milk again! What the hell was I thinking?

A little…No, very concerned

December 25th, 2007

The Suns have faced several good teams lately and the tougher competition has given fans and NBA heads a better idea of how good this team actually is. Uneven efforts are going to be there early in the season and teams lose some games they shouldn't lose- that's acceptable. What becoming clearer, the more I listen to Jeff Van Gundy critique the team while they lose on national TV- this team is not as good as last year.

The same can be said for several teams who have awful records (Miami, Chicago) but the Suns' record is good but their play is frustratingly inconsistent. They beat Utah at home, then can't convert in the clutch against New Orleans. They play great defense and get clutch buckets against the Spurs and then spot Dallas 37 points in the 1st quarter of a game they lose by three. They get a balanced effort against Toronto then get worked by the Lakers, who are a better team at this point.

The team just isn't putting together a solid 48 minutes. A major reason (beside starters admittedly not playing hard, poor chemistry and injuries) is the awful bench play. Some games the bench is weakened by LB starting due to Raja's mounting injury issues. Overall though, the bench rarely builds a lead and often treads water until Nash returns to the game- especially against good teams. Similar to football, the formula for success isn't just star players it's an abundance of capable role players. When Coach D'Antoni turns to the bench he gets points from Barbosa, rebounds and blocks from SKinner and whatever from Diaw. In the West, all the teams are deep and right now it looks like the Suns don't have enough versatility for the tougher match-ups.

Watching the team play, it seems they are revealing who they really are after a East-heavy start. The team feasted on the East last year as well but their 12-2 record against the East is the bulk of the "elite" record at this point. In many games the team is playing to the level of the competition and failing to bring consistent energy on defense. Meanwhile, Golden State plays small ball better than PHX and with more athleticism. The Lakers have a stellar bench that scores and defends in relief of Kobe. Just looking at these teams within the division who've handled the Suns to this point is cause for concern. It's becoming obvious it's time for a trade.

They have to bolster their bench or at least give some guys minutes to earn their money. I too have begun to feel as dumbfounded as other fans who don't get how a team can make moves to save money yet play the shortest rotation in the league. Either stop wasting money on practice players or make a move to get some help. Marcus Banks either needs to play or be bought out. Watching Boris Diaw go through the motions makes me sick considering he makes more than players like Marcus Camby and Hedo Turkoglu and about the same as Tayshaun Prince. LB continues to be a great scorer but he isn't a point guard and the 2nd unit offense just stagnates when his shot is off.

Of course with a team over the luxury tax, it's easier said than done but it's obvious on the court that this team is missing something. The team only plays defense when they're down 10 or more. The Suns nastiness seems to primarily reside with Raja Bell. After watching the Lakers highlight reel on Christmas day- the team should be embarrassed with their defense. This is no longer the powerhouse team that came into your arena, lit you up and rolled out with a win. The Suns have a bulls-eye on their back but now they often fold after taking a team's best shot.

I think at this point a personnel move is the way to go. Their role players have bad contracts but they do have a bargaining chip in Atlanta's draft pick. Even if it's a backup point who can actually run an uptempo team and create shots or another shooter, something has to be done because the gap has been closed in the division and the conference. The Suns weaknesses will not go away without a roster move. I'm optimistic the team can improve internally but it will require a far more consistent effort than they've put forth in recent weeks. No matter how good Coach D'Antoni says they are- pathetic defensive efforts like the one against LA are fuel for his critics and proof this roster can't seriously challenge for a title.

Still Got Some Pride

December 24th, 2007

Kurt Warner and the Cards get another late win(AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin) Well, they made it look difficult against a really bad team, but a win is a win. And right now, with a chance to go 8-8 and take some momentum into the off season, the Arizona Cardinals have to be happy with their 4th quarter rally and eventual overtime victory over the floundering Atlanta [...]

Basketball Update

December 24th, 2007

Happy Holidays to everyone....just wanted to check in and throw in a review of the past week for the basketball team. For those of you who value the insight of NCAA crazyman Dick Vitale, check out his weekly awards to see his praise for his Coach of the Week, Herb Sendek.

ASU picked up two more wins last week to improve to 9-2, already surpassing last year's win total for the season. With wins over Montana State and Idaho, ASU has only one more non-conference game remaining before the Pac-10 season begins. The Sun Devils will face St. Francis (PA) on Saturday, December 29 at home at 2pm.

The margin of victory over Montana State on Tuesday was smaller than expected, due mainly to the 14-of-24 shooting behind the arc that Montana State unloaded. Every time ASU tried to make a run, Montana State would hit a couple threes and be right back on the Devils' heels. ASU's zone leaves the three open a lot and Montana State is one of those teams that can just shoot the lights out from downtown. I'm guessing there isn't a lot to do up in Montana besides work on your J.

The Idaho game accented the fact that Sendek has made more of an effort to establish Jeff Pendergraph early in the game on offense. Pendergraph scored 8 of the first 10 Sun Devil points and went on to a career high 27 points for the game. Idaho also was on point from deep, going 13-of-23 from behind the arc. ASU again received a solid contribution from James Harden (17 points, 6 boards) and increasingly reliable scorers Ty Abbott and Jerren Shipp (combining for 26 points and 13 boards) but the game played out a lot like the Montana State game.

The last two opponents have exploited the weakness of the zone defense by shooting a high percentage from outside and we'll have to see how this plays out in the incredibly deep Pac-10. One stat that I've always thought was indicative of how a team plays and controls the game is the number of free throws for each team. What I mean by this is that you always want to make more free throws than the opposing team attempts (especially if your team is not a particularly high scoring team...like ASU, for example), and if you do this, there is generally a good chance your team will be in position to win the game (ignore this completely when watching Suns games). ASU has done a good job all year of reaching this....benchmark I guess you could call it, and this will be increasingly important during close games.

Barring any mishaps or letdowns, ASU should win Saturday and take a 10-2 record into Pac-10 play...the program's best start in years. ASU opens conference play at home on January 3 at 7pm against the Oregon Ducks. I'm hoping to have another podcast up before then to go over a preview of the Pac-10 and it's overall nastiness this year.

Until then, check out Justin's piece with NBC Sports previewing the Holiday Bowl (highly enjoyable by the way) and root for the Devils on Thursday in San Diego. Go Devils!

WESTGATE CITY CENTER TO HOST COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S PARTY DAY PRESENTED BY NISSAN

December 24th, 2007

WESTGATE CITY CENTER TO HOST
COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S PARTY DAY PRESENTED BY NISSAN

GLENDALE, ARIZONA, Friday, December 21, 2007 – On January 2, the day the Tostito’s Fiesta Bowl will be played at the adjacent University of Phoenix Stadium, Westgate City Center will be at the center of the action with “College Football’s Party Day Presented By Nissan” on the WaterDance Plaza for college football fans to party on the day of the game.

westgate-fountains.jpg
The game between West Virginia and Oklahoma will begin at 5:30 pm, but the festivities at Westgate kick off at noon, with West Virginia and Oklahoma marching bands, cheerleaders, pep rallies, live music from hometown West Virginia and Oklahoma bands on the main WaterDance Plaza stage.

Live Bands
Live bands featured that day include Galapagos from Oklahoma and Vs. The Earth from West Virginia, some of the most successful local bands in those markets.

Additionally, for those that do not have tickets to the game, a supersized LED board on the main stage will show all the action for those in attendance.

Food and beverage vendors as well as sponsor exhibits will be located throughout the plaza, and throughout the day and into the evening, the now famous Bellagio-inspired $6 million WaterDance Fountains will continue to be on display, with its regular schedule of shows at the top and bottom of each hour.

“With the game starting at 5:30 pm, we hope people will stop by after work and enjoy the major party at Westgate,” said Dave Groff, President of Westgate Entertainment & Sports. “We”ll have hi-top tables, space heaters, and plenty of food and beverages, and of course, being right next to the stadium, Westgate will be the center of the action around the game.”

small-u-of-p-from-westgate.JPG

This event is FREE to all and parking on Westgate’s lots for football and party patrons is $30 per car.

During the past year, Westgate WaterDance Plaza has become one of the Valley’s signature outdoor concert and party venues, and in the past few weeks, the visibility of the Plaza was elevated to another level with the opening of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, a 20,000 square foot nautical themed restaurant, bar, retail store, and live entertainment venue. Prior to New Year’s Eve, additional restaurants to open along the water on the Plaza include Paparone’s Pizza and Hell’s Half Acre Whiskey Bar.

Limping to the finish line, Cardinals beat Atlanta in OT 30-27

December 24th, 2007

461462-1229089-thumbnail.jpg
This is a posting by Mark which can also be seen on MVN.com

In what would have been the single worse loss of the year had they not made a comeback at the end, the Cardinals today snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by scoring on the last play of regulation to tie the game 27-27 on Neil Rackers chip shot. Then after a quick march down the field the Cardinals nailed another field goal from 31 yards out to win it in OT, with Rackers finally removing the goat horns he has been wearing most of last year and this season as well.

While i’m glad they won, the fact is they should have NEVER allowed it to be this close other then the Cardinals secondary is quite possibly the worst in the NFL right now. The way Chris Redmond, yes that Chris Redmond, moved the Falcon’s up and down the field in the second half you would have thought Joe Montana was out of retirement. I don’t think I have ever seen an NFL secondary playing as scared as the Cardinals are now and with so little ability to cover man to man or play any type of press coverage. It has to be causing ulcers for the Cardinals coaching staff knowing they are totally limited in their ability to cover man to man at all and that players like Antrel Rolle and Rod Hood are going to be exposed by a guy like Redmond.

The entire second half the Cardinals gave the Falcon’s receivers 7 to 10 yards cushion on every play and the Falcon’s finally figured out all they had to do was play pitch and catch and run down the field. The play in the first half where Rolle was completely turned around by Laurent Robinson on a 73 post pattern, a play where he was 8 yards off the line to start, got turned on a simple move and literally didn’t lay a hand on Robinson the entire way was the single best argument that Rolle MUST be moved to safety next year and off corner. The poor guy is trying but he just doesn’t have the hips or speed to play corner in the NFL so quit trying to force him into that role. he would likely be a fine free safety so how about making the change now rather then seeing him go to another team who does what we should have done from the beginning.  Then late in the game when the Cardinals finally, out of desperation went to press coverage, the Falcon’s went right over the top at Rod Hood who had to tackle the Falcon’s receiver to prevent a touchdown due to his inability to cover deep. I really like Hood and think he was a great signing but he is more of a cover two guy then a press corner and that play showed again his weakness for deep coverage when he is up on the line.

Thankfully, today was the game when Anquan Boldin finally looked like his old self and Kurt Warner started to get him the ball. Boldin set an NFL record today by being the faster player to 400 career catches in NFL history and then put up a 13 catch, 162 yard,  2 TD performance highlighted by 4 superb one hand catches in traffic. It was a monster game that kept the Cardinals from losing a game that shouldn’t even have been close and it was great to see for all of us Boldin fans.

Kurt Warner continued his assault on the Cardinals record books with a 3 touch down, zero interception, 361 yard passing game. He only needs three touchdowns next week against the Rams to set the teams single season passing touchdown record, which given that he only started for part of the year is amazing. I know Kurt has his limitations, but quite frankly so do 95% of all the NFL quarterbacks and that he is having this kind of year at age 36 is pretty remarkable.

Bottom line on this one? The Cardinals dodged a bullet because Atlanta took a full half to realize they should be throwing on almost every down at the Cardinals secondary. I am afraid next week that Mark Bulger is going to have a field day and it could be a painful loss to end the season, but until then lets enjoy this win and the fact that Rackers finally hit some kicks when they counted.

A Point is a Point - Canucks

December 24th, 2007

Even Bryz! said the first period was boring. I wouldn’t know. I was walking up and down the concourse hawking 50/50 raffle tickets like a demented side show barker. Hope we (Coyotes Booster Club) did good for Coyotes Charities. There sure was a full house. Holidays, winning streak, team we rarely see …what ever caused it I don’t care. At least the boys had butts in the seats to welcome them home.

Pretty quiet bunch through most of the game, except break aways, scrums and when my boy Z tied up the game. Uh huh, you heard what I typed… my boy found his wrister and it is a thing of beauty.

So anyways I guess I should get on with it. BTW…our Captain was mic’d up …wonder what the normal conversations are like with the
