Suns come back from 20 down to beat Sonics 104-96
(AP Photo/Paul Connors) The Suns came back from a 20-point deficit, after the first quarter, to beat the Sonics 104-96. Phoenix, now on a 4-game winning streak, has the best record in the West at 23-9.
It was retro night at the US Airways Center as the Suns celebrated their 40th anniversary. The cheerleaders wore 60’s outfit while the players, refusing to play in those 60’s uniforms, wore nice orange headbands to start the game.
The Suns also started the game like an old timers affair: no energy, no defense, no rebounding, poor shooting (4-of-20 in the first period).
The Sonics started the game very aggressively, leading 19-7 after 7 minutes and outrebounding the Suns 22-10 in the first quarter. Seattle, led by Durant (28 points in the game) and, former Sun Kurt Thomas (14 points, 12 rebounds), took a 33-13 lead at the end of the first period of play.
The Suns came back in the second quarter as Steve Nash (17 points, 10 assists) took over the game. The Suns started making shots, getting points in transition and putting some energy on the floor.
It was 45-43 Seattle at the half as Phoenix outscored the Sonics 30-12 in the second quarter.
Stoudemire led the Suns with 34 points (a few good dunks here an there) and 11 rebounds, while Barbosa added 16 off the bench.
Phoenix took the lead for good in the third quarter to secure the win.
The Sonics lost most of their intensity late in the game and made plenty of mistakes, what would you expect from a very young team. Seattle shot a poor 40-of-103 from the field in the end, scoring just 30 points the the second and third quarters combined.
The Suns will now continue their 4-game home stand on Saturday (7 PM) against the Hornets (21-11) and it should be very interesting to watch New Orleans’ PG Chris Paul play against Steve Nash. In their first meeting of the season, in mid December, it was Paul winning the duel as the Hornets beat the Suns 101-98.
