Suns back at full speed, beat Grizzlies 127-113

02/27/08 4:20 AM

Shaq v. Memphis’ height=”250″/>(AP Photo/Lance Murphey) Steve Nash and Amaré Stoudemire scored 25 points each to lead the Suns past the Grizzlies 127-113 in Memphis. Grant Hill added 23 points as six Suns scored in double figures.

Phoenix shot very well from the field (48-for-83 almost 58 percent overall) and had the better of a Memphis team that had more shots and fewer turnovers. It was a classic case of a veteran team beating a talented but inexperienced opponents.

The Suns also controlled the boards (48-to-36) led by Shaq’s first double double (13 points, 11 rebounds) of his Suns career. “I’m still trying to fit in,” O’Neal said. “While I’m fitting in I’m just trying to do little things like getting all the rebounds, ignite the break when they double hit the open guy.”

After scoring 85 and 86 point in the previous two games against Boston and Detroit the Suns got back to a more usual 127 in the game in Memphis.

The Grizzlies, who, counting this one, have now lost 12 of their last 13 games, proved to be tougher then expected to close as the Suns were able to secure the win on a 19-8 run in the closing period after Memphis had regained the lead with just 10 minutes to go in the contest.

The excellent Rudy Gay led all scorers with a career-high 36 points (14-of-27 from the field) while Memphis had 23 points from “La Bomba” Navarro who is potentially (by far) the best of the rich collection of young guards the Grizzlies can use.

Memphis is actually tying to lose games (see the Paul Gasol trade), as many as they can, since they’re on a rebuilding process and save money since the franchise is for sale because nobody really cares about Pro Basketball in Tennessee. In all this mess coach Iavaroni is doing a solid job developing the young players.

No time to rest as the Suns (39-18) will face Chris Paul and the Hornets tonight (6 PM) in New Orleans. It should be a much tougher game against a team the Suns have suffered a lot (0-3 so far) this season.

Yours truly, Steve Fan
