Suns hold on for 97-92 win in Portland

Shaq v. Portland’ height=”250″ />(AP Photo/Greg Wahl-Stephens) The Suns built an early lead and were able to hold off a late surge by the Blazers to seal the win, 97-92, and stop the losing streak at 2 games.

Phoenix led 60-41 at the half and dominated the first 24 minutes of basketball. The young athletic Blazers put together a good rally in the second half but the Suns came home winners in this one. And a much needed win it was.
As good as the first half was, the second half was really a pain to watch for the Suns. Whatever, this time of the year, in this technical mess (like the one the Suns are into right now), a win on the road has to be considered great news.

“We’re still a work in progress,” O’Neal said. “But if we can play like we did in the first half, we’ll be all right.”

The Blazers are one of the best story in the NBA this year and have tremendous core of young talented players led by 2007 Rookie of the Year, Brandon Roy who led all scorers with 25 last night.

It was a game that saw both teams having very similar stats in the end: both teams shot 41%, the Blazers had 1 more rebounds total (51-50) and one less turnover (15-14).

STAT led the Suns with 22 points while Shaq had 6 points but 13 rebounds. Nash added 19 points but had only 4 assists in the game. Worthy of mention has to be the first basket by newly acquired Gordan Giricek (a nice shooter that could help doqn the stretch).

No time to enjoy the win as the Suns (40-20) will face the Nuggets tonight (7 PM) in Denver. Wouldn’t you love a 2-game winning streak?

Yours truly, (a confused) Steve Fan
