The Chicago White Sox got all their runs (5) against Diamondbacks starter Dan Haren, but lost the game 6-5. Haren tends to have lousy springs, so the fact that he gave up 4 earned runs today in not necessarily cause for alarm. Two or three starts from now would be a different story. But not to worry…yet.
The big bat for the Snakes today belonged Augie Ojeda who got 2 RBI for hit 1 hit and was the only player to drive home more than one. That helped offset the fact that he GIDP, left a runner in scoring position with 2 out, and made a fielding error. Justin Upton drove in his 6th run of the spring. Jeff Salazar added to the score with a SF. And some prospect catcher named W. Castillo drove one in also. But seriously, with it looking more likely that Chad Tracy and Miguel Montero will start the season on the DL, Robbie Hammock, who played 1B today, has to get the open roster spot. HAS TO…really. He’s too versatile not to.
Conor Jackson, who was batting cleanup, went 3-4, with a 2-out RBI. Keep him in the cleanup spot, BoMel. Byrnesie No. 3 and CoJack No. 4. The other way around and CoJack might gum up the basepaths ahead of Byrnesie whereas Young (1), Hudson (2) or even Drew (2) and Byrnes (3) set up interesting double-steal possibilities.
Speaking of Byrnesie, he didn’t play today. But as you can see, that doesn’t keep me from talking about him.
