STAT and Shaq lead Suns past Blazers for 5th straight win

03/19/08 11:41 AM

Shaq v. Blazers’ height=”250″/>(AP Photo/Rick Bowmer) The big men combination of STAT (25 points, 7 rebounds) and Shaq (16 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists) led the Suns to their fifth straight win, 111-98 over the Trail Blazers yesterday night in Portland.

Nash added 22 points and 8 assists while Diaw and Barbosa each had 12 points off the bench in the Suns win.

Phoenix was able to take the lead for good, after a hard fought affair, in the third quarter as a 21-7 run proved to be the difference. The Suns shot an excellent 55 percent (44-for-80) and a very good 41.7 percent from beyond the arch (10-for-24).

The game was a physical battle and the Suns were able to hold the Blazers to a poor 44 percent shooting from the field despite sending them to the free throw line 25 times (of which Portland nailed 20).

It was a very encouraging win since the Blazers, despite not being a playoff bound team, are a very good and well coached basketball team, one playing with energy, especially at home, and with some great talent.

Even Coach McMillen was ready to compliment the Suns: “is a really good team. The way they play and now the way have adjusted their game to include Shaq makes them really difficult to play”.

“Big Smooth” Lamarcus Aldridge led all scorers with 31 points while Blake, Jack, Outlaw and Frye all scored in double digits.

Even the Suns defense was not that bad. “We were really solid from beginning to end. The defense was good” according to coach D’Antoni.
Bell held super sophomore Brandon Roy to 6 points on 3-for-14 shooting. I love watching Raja playing this kind of defense.

The last time the Suns (45-22) had a five-game winning streak was early December, and I can’t see a good reason why the streak won’t continue tonight (7 PM) in Seattle.

Yours truly, Steve Fan
