Olson Shows O’Neill The Door
When we read the news that Lute Olson was cleared by his doctor, planned to keep coaching until 2011 and that Kevin O’Neill was not returning we made it a point to check the calendar. Yes it was the 1st of April which meant this was all an elaborate April fools day joke by the Arizona athletic department right?
Wrong!
The cats handed the reigns back over to Lute Olson until 2011 (or another “personal matter”) and his successor was no more.
No matter what the spin it is tough to believe that O’Neill chose to leave the team. The more likely scenario is that Lute more than happily gave KO the KO and showed him the door. This after O’Neill picked up after Lute’s mess and led a club that was poorly assembled, by Lute himself, to a tournament birth in a tough Pac-10 conference.
While O’Neill may not have been the answer for the long run he at least he stepped in when Lute couldn’t take care of his own program. Lute wants the chance to name his successor and he will have his chance now………to bad for the UofA faithful it will be in 2011 and way too late.
