In the end the Suns can’t shine in Denver
(AP Photo/Jack Dempsey) It was Suns vs. Nuggets Take 2 in Denver last night. This time the game was close from start to finish and the Nuggets found a way to win, 126-120, in the closing seconds as Camby (6 points, 11 rebounds) and Anthony (25 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 8 turnovers) made key plays late.
Allen Iverson led all scorers with 31 points in leading Denver to victory and above all to a half game lead over the Warriors for eighth place in the Conference. “Every game seems like a playoff” stated The Answer after the win.
No 22-point deficit this time but no come back either for the Suns who played a good overall game, especially considering the fact that they were playing without Grant Hill (still out, still day-to-day) and without Raja Bell for most of the second half, since he was ejected early in the third quarter.
“Raja got ejected for smiling and I never saw that in my career” at least according to teammate Stoudemire. We all know Raja is a very nice guy and he’s always smiling. I guess irony is not working with NBA refs these days.
Barbosa led the Suns with 27 points (despite missing a key 3-pointer for the tie with 15 seconds left) while Stoudemire had 25 points and 10 boards. Double-double for Shaq as well (14 points, 13 rebounds in 29 minutes).
18 assists, a wonderful 3-pointer to put the Suns up with 2:30 left in the game and the usual great performance at QB. Amid those MVP chants for Stoudemire, Steve is still no. 1. (check Nash: Monthly Invoicing if you wish).
It was a highly contested affair and a “Big playoff atmosphere type of game” (in the words of STAT) that could have gone both ways.
Just to give you an idea of how close it was: Rebounds (Suns 45, Nuggets 45), Turnovers (Suns 17, Nuggets 16), Shooting percentage (Suns 52.8, Nuggets 51.3), Fouls (Suns 29, Nuggets 27), and so on.
The Suns (50-25) now have seven games left in the regular season, five against possible playoffs teams. Before facing Dallas, San Antonio, Golden State, Houston…The Suns host the Timberwolves on Friday Night (7 PM) at USAC.
