Great Send-Off for Doug Davis: D’Backs 10 - LA 5
Doug Davis’ last start before thyroid cancer surgery was everything he could have wanted. Hollywood couldn’t have scripted it better.
Quality start: 6 innings, 2 runs on 6 hits, with 2 BBs and 7 Ks.
Icing on the cake: Davis who has one of baseball’s best moves to first, picked off rookie 3B Brian DeWitt. Welcome to the majors, rook! And Davis, a light hitter even among pitchers, helped his own cause with two singles, one of which drove in a run.
Run Support: Davis was up 3-0 at the end of the first, courtesy of a homer by Mark Reynolds. “The Sheriff” now has 5 homers and 12 RBI to lead the majors in both categories. Davis gave up a 2-run double in the 6th but the D’Backs tacked on 4 in the 7th, three of which came on a bases-clearing triple by Conor Jackson. (Eric Byrnes was on base for that one).
The Bullpen Held: Cruz and Slaten specifically in that crucial 7th inning. By the time the Dodgers scored against Medders (2) and Petit (1) in the 8th and 9th, it was too late.
Emotional Support: When Davis left the game, the fans gave him a standing O and demanded a curtain call. The team, especially the other starters, surrounded Davis, who did not leave the bench when he came out.
Now comes Davis’ toughtest opponent. Best of luck to you, Double D. I look forward to seeing the D’Backs scoring another 10 runs for you the day you come back!
