The Diamondbacks beat the Giants 8-2 yesterday, which means they will do better than they did against the Giants this time last year, when they were swept. Brandon Webb goes against Barry Zito for the rubber match, which should be interesting. But as I told Tigger yesterday, I think Haren vs. Zito would be even more interesting from a dramatic point of view.
Tigger is ready with Go Zito Go signs; one of them has the “om” symbol on it;
she’d like to hear Giants fans chant “om” when Zito pitches; it would probably freak out the opposition, she says. The other has the hand signal for “hang loose.” As far as I know, this latter symbol does not also double as a Luciferian/reptilian/Masonic/Texas Longhorns symbol.
Speaking of doubles, Byrnesie had one yesterday, one of those shallow, inconveniently placed balls the outfielder couldn’t quite catch kind, that belie the notion that Byrnesie is false hustle. Most guys would have only gotten a single out of it.
As Eric has said, “Day game after a night game…Advantage Byrnes.” He went 2-4 and a walk, with an RBI and a run. The RBI single wasn’t much either. But, as Yogi might say, luck is good if it’s good. With the bases loaded, Byrnesie lunged for a pitch and popped it into shallow left-center where the left fielder, Fred Lewis, trapped it instead of catching it; just able the same place where the same left fielder would not catch the double. You can forgive that kind of play in a 42-year-old, surgery-laden Barry Bonds, his bat more than made up for inability to make those catches. But this Fred Lewis guy has no such excuses or make-up ability. Later on, he fielded a hit, went to throw, and the ball squirted out of his hands and traveled 3 feet. I don’t know if he was having a bad day or is just a bad fielder but I sure like him from a Diamondbacks point of view.
It was sunny, but still cold. I had on a turtle-neck long-sleeved shirt, a purple and teal Diamondbacks T with Byrnes’ name and number on the back, the Byrnes dirty-t also from 2006 and my Byrnes jersey on. (My 3/4 sleeve Byrnesblog jersey are in the laundry and I sent Eric the shirt I had las year with his picture on it during the playoffs because I had said he liked the swing that was captured in the photo). I didn’t take off any layers. I also brought my purple sweatshirt, which I donned while waiting for a bus back downtown after the game, and I also had with me a red, long sleeved list jacket that I did not have to use. I will take all the layers with me again for today’s 12:45 start.
The wind was not blowing as bad as it was at night, but it was blowing enough to keep things cool and keep high flies in the park. But line drives can get out quickly and so I am hoping Zito or some other Giants pitcher will hang a curve Byrnesie can line out of the park. I have yet to ever see him homer in person!
Go, Byrnesie!
Go, Snakes!
