True Elation 3: Remembering to win the close ones

“I don't think this is an aberration the way we're playing. I think this is the type of team that this is."

Eric Byrnes, after the game.

Yes, the Diamondbacks are not going to score 10 runs all the time. But to win, all you need is one run more than the other team.

The Diamondbacks were down 2-1 in the fifth inning, with Micah Owings, who went 2-3 at the plate tonight, standing on first, with one out, when Giants’ starter Kevin Correia did something I strongly recommend to all pitchers facing Eric Byrnes. He threw a belt high fast ball down the middle. Byrnesie deposited it in the left field bleachers, putting the Diamondbacks ahead for good, which is why this is a True Elation game despite the fact that he got only one hit. And he did it cleanshaven.

Home runs formed the path to victory tonight. The Snakes scored their first run in the second on a homer by Mark Reynolds. Orlando Hudson added an insurance run with a homer in the 7th. It would have been a two-run homer if Byrnesie, who reached first on a throwing error, hadn’t been caught stealing. (Byrnesie will tell you he thinks Bengie Molina is the toughest catcher to steal against). But we’ll put that little incident on the back burner this day.

Micah Owings pitched 6-1/3, giving up two runs, while striking out 4 and walking one. He is now 4-0, just like Brandon Webb. Chad Qualls and Tony Pena got holds and Brandon Lyon picked up his 4th save.
