In a word…

YUCK!

or a word that rhymes with YUCK.

Yesterday’s 8-3 loss to the Dodgers — the last place, just off a horrible road trip Dodgers of all teams! — was yuck because the D’Backs had the opportunity to pull it out anyway, but didn’t.

Dan Haren definitely did not have his stuff last night. It happens. Considering that he has turned in 33 consecutive quality starts, i.e. 6 innings or more, 3 earnies or fewer, he had it coming. (I’m taking Vin Scully’s word for that 33 stat, BTW). It’s what happened after he left that was most distressing.

The bullpen failed to hold the line: inherited runners scored, and then more Dodgers got on base.

Sloppy defense: Justin Upton dropped an easy fly ball, letting two more runs in.

Lack of clutch hitting: The D’backs had the bases loaded in the 7th innings but Chris Young struck out and Eric Byrnes popped out to the 2B after coming back from down 0-2 to a 3-2 count.

8th inning more of the same, three runners stranded. The team that has shown Anybody-Anytime clutch hitting, showed yesterday that they can match each other in poor performance as well. The Dodgers did not beat them so much as they beat themselves, thereby benefiting the Dodgers.

Byrnesie, seriously, you are lacking something when you come up with the bases loaded. Your outs with the sacks full are typically of the strike out, pop up, double-play variety. And you haven’t cleared the bases with a double or a triple in years, if ever, and I know you’ve never hit a grand slam in the majors. You are a qualitatively different, and lesser, hitter with the bases loaded than at any other time. Seventh inning last night (and the 7th inning is typically a good one for you) was the 6th time this season you’ve come up with the sacks full. 18 potential RBI, 24 if we count you. How many did you actually get? I can think of 4. NOT GOOD! You’ve had so many opportunities for RBI this month than you should be among the league leaders, but you’re not even leading the team, much less the league. What’s up with that?

Edgar Gonzalez vs. Chad Billingsley tonight. Get it together, guys!
