Brandon Webb gave up only 1 unearned run (fielding error by Orlando Hudson) in 6 innings on his way to a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres. He’s now 6-0 on the season. Juan Cruz, Tony Pena and Brandon Lyon, who saved his seventh, each did their jobs. The D’Backs ended their run of 22 games against Western Division opponents 17-5. They are 18-7 over all and have not lost a series since the first one in Cincinnati.

The Snakes got their runs in the second inning, when Stephen Drew walked and Chris Snyder homered. Although Snyder’s batting average is still an anemic .214, he now has 12 RBI.

Eric Byrnes went 0-4. Time to shave again. But at least he did not strike out, GIDP, or leave runners in scoring position with two out.

Peavy gave up only four hits and his relievers, Bell and Meredith, did not give up any.

Max Scherzer, the Diamondbacks 2006 first round draft pick (11th overall) was called up from Tuscon and joined the team in San Diego this morning. Yusmeiro Petit was option to Tuscon. Although Scherzer is projected to be a starter, he was called up to provided bullpen help. In four starts in Tuscon, the right-handed Scherzer 0-0, but with a 1.17 ERA and 38 and 38 strikeouts. He has walked only 3 in 23 Triple A innings.

The Snakes will close out April at home against the Houston Astros. So now it begins: we know that the Diamondbacks, so far at least, are the class of the NL West. How will they fare against the rest of the league?
