Coach D’Antoni Heads To New York

05/10/08 1:36 PM

Mike D'Antoni KnicksThe News: You can now put a “former” in front of Phoenix Suns Head Coach Mike D’Antoni.
Sources say he has agreed to become the new head coach of the New York Knicks. D’Antoni will take over a team that went 23-59 last year under Isaiah Thomas. According to SI.com D’Antoni is netting a 4 year deal worth $24 Million.

D’Antoni finished his tenure as Suns head coach with a 253-136 (.650) record. He also coached the team to two of the top three best seasons in Phoenix history.

Our Take: While we weren’t necessarily Coach D’s biggest fans when it came to the way he handled his bench or defense we are still sad to see him go. This seems like a lose-lose situation as the Suns lose a top notch coach and D’Antoni inherits an over priced roster that doesn’t seem to fit his style.

Both sides however got what they wanted. D’Antoni doesn’t have to change his style and the Suns don’t have to pay to get rid of him. Although both are happy now we have a feeling that it is a decision both sides will regret, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but soon.

Now that the drama is over it’s time for both sides to pick up the pieces and two questions remain, Can D’Antoni and his brand of basketball turn around the failing Knicks and can the Phoenix Suns find a head coach whose style can lead them to the NBA championship. Our guess is it’s the same answer for both questions…..No.

I am glad I am mormon and don’t do that.
