Cardinals Can’t Even Win At Being Bad
The guys over at Foxsports.com ranked the Top 10 Worst Professional Sports Franchises. It was no surprise that the Arizona Cardinals made it on the list but where they were ranked was a bit upsetting. Foxsports.com ranked the Cardinals as the 3rd worst franchise of all time. That’s right 3rd. Obviously the writer has never suffered through a season (or an off season for that matter) being an Arizona Cardinals fan. Here is what they had to say:
3. Arizona Cardinals:
The Cardinals logo appears next to “loser” in the NFL dictionary. The Cardinals have made just four playoff appearances in 45 years since Bill Bidwill got his hands on the team. Bidwill is known as a cheapo, which explains why the Cardinals are always short on star power and talent. The closest they’ve come to success was when Cuba Gooding, Jr. as Rod Tidwell, in the movie “Jerry McGuire,” wore a Cardinals jersey.Puzzling personnel plays: Signing Emmitt Smith, and drafting Andre Wadsworth and Kelly Stouffer (when the team was in St. Louis).
Remember … 2003: The Arizona Cardinals were abysmal, and it was head coach Dave McGinnis’ second and last season. At 3-12, the Cardinals had the first pick overall in sight, but instead decided to play spoiler in Week 17 to the Minnesota Vikings. Cardinals’ quarterback Josh McCown found Nathan Poole falling out of the end zone on the last play of the game to ruin the Vikings’ playoff hopes and keep the Cardinals out of the first slot in the draft, which was Super Bowl XLII MVP Eli Manning.
The two teams ahead of the Cardinals on the list? The Kansas City Royals and the Pittsburgh Pirates. While in no way is anyone willing to defend the Royals and Pirates as model organizations they do have decent seasons to show for the efforts over the last 25 years. Heck the Royals won a world series and the Pirates were contenders. Both of those franchise misfortunes can be more blamed on a faulty financial model by Major League Baseball more than poor ownership.
As for the Cardinals they play in a league where parity reigns supreme. For this reason they only have themselves (or Bill Bidwill) to blame for their lack of success since 1947 (that pre-dates the Super Bowl people). As a fan of the Cardinals you should want them to succeed at something even if it is being bad. So to our friends over at Fox Sports please please please give the Cardinals the top spot next year. At least then they can call themselves winners at something.
