Isn’t it a little soon for rankings?

05/12/08 2:35 PM

Let me go on record and say I hate the BCS. I despise it with all every fiber of my being. I hate it almost as much as I hate “Shot of Love” with Tila Tequila on MTV. But if there’s one thing the BCS gets right, its that the first BCS poll doesn’t come out until mid-October, when many teams around the country have already played 6 games. At least, with that much action already in the rear-view mirror, the initial BCS rankings are indicative of what’s going on in College Football.

So why is it that in May, every National media outlet finds it necessary to rank college football teams based on their Spring practices? Isn’t that a little too early?

They do it, so I’ll tell you about it. Here’s where ASU ranks in several Spring Football polls…

Stewart Mandel - SI.com has ASU ranked #16

Matt Hayes - Sporting News has ASU ranked #17

Dennis Dodd - CBS Sports has ASU ranked #18

Mitch Harper’s College Football Blog has ASU ranked #6…Mitch must really love the Devils.

Mark Schlabach - ESPN.com has ASU ranked #13….this one’s my favorite. ASU has actually fallen 3 spots in Schlabach’s spring rankings without playing a down. Sure, that makes sense.

Mandel, Hayes and Harper all have Georgia (which visits Sun Devil Stadium September 20) as the top team in the land, while Schlabach and Dodd have Ohio State as #1. Schlabach even had Ohio State leapfrog Georgia in his latest poll, of course by virtue of Ohio State’s convincing spring victory over, well…umm, Ohio State!

So if Dodd and Schlabach are some sort of fortune tellers, get ready for The Ohio State University to embarrass themselves in the BCS Championship game for the third straight year.
