ASU says, “Bye, Bye, Bye”
Arizona State University has decided to say Bye, Bye, Bye to men’s wrestling, tennis, and swimming to save over $1 million a year in operating costs.
Lisa Love remarks, “The profile or our operations budget and donation base does not lend itself to the sponsorship of 22 athletic teams,” Love said. “While our revenue streams are achieving a positive trajectory, they are simply not keeping pace with the current size and scope of the department.”
The last time any of these three sports won a championship was 20 years ago (Men’s wrestling team 1988, NCAA Championship).
Looking back this is only the second time since cutting Men’s gymnastics in 1993, ASU eliminated a program(s). Which men’s program is next or does the cutting stop here?
