Believe it or not…Webb’s got Cy Young competition
Brandon Webb has been phenomenal in 2008 for the Arizona Diamondbacks. How can you argue with a perfect 9-0 record in 9 starts? You can’t. I know they don’t hand out the Cy Young Award in May; but if they did, there’s a great chance Webb would be hoisting his 2nd such trophy.
But you may not know this- there’s other pitchers out there who are having phenomenal seasons as well. Namely, Edinson Volquez, the 24-year old right hander of the Cincinnati Reds. Before this season, Volquez was only 3-11 lifetime in 20 career appearances for the Texas Rangers. But since being dealt by the Rangers to Cincinnati for OF Josh Hamilton in December, Volquez has been virtually unhittable. He’s got a Gibson-like ERA! Again, I realize its only May, but check out the stat comparison:
| Pitcher Head-To-Head | ||||||||
| Name | GS | INN | W | L | K | BB | ERA | |

Edinson Volquez | 8 | 48.1 | 6 | 1 | 57 | 17 | 1.12 |

Brandon Webb | 9 | 63.1 | 9 | 0 | 49 | 17 | 2.56 |
I would expect more of the same from Webb as the season goes along. He’s got the advantage of a first place team, and the experience of winning a Cy Young before. While Volquez pitches in a notorious hitter’s ballpark on a last place team. The grind of losing could take its toll on the youngster. Of course, each has about 26 starts left, so…

Wow, it’s a good thing I added Vosquez to my fantasy team back in mid-April. What a steal! He wasn’t on anybody’s team in a 14 team league!
