Webb Wins Again! D’Backs Sweep Rockies.

Brandon Webb just gets better every year. He actually had more wins and a better ERA last year, when he finished second in the Cy Young balloting to Jake Peavy, than he did when he won the award in 2006. And in 2008, he has won his first 9 starts, the latest being an 8-5 victory to finish the sweep of the Rockies. Any guess who’s the odds-on favorites to be the NL starter in the All-Star Game at Yankee stadium?

Webb pitched 7.1 and give up 3 runs.

He credits his teammates for the hot start. They usually give him early leads. (Of course, that also means Webb’s not giving up runs early). The Snakes got a run in the first, and then added 4 more in the fourth. Three of those four came on a homer by Chris Snyder.

Now it is time for interleague play, where NL teams, including the D’Backs, have not been doing so well. They face the Detroit Tigers, who have lost 9 of their last 11 and have been a big disappointment. Tonight’s starter, Dan Haren, has faced the Tigers six times in his career, going 1-4 with a 5.12 ERA. Last season in three games against Detroit, he was 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA. So that is nothing to write home about. But he faces Jeremy Bonderman, who is 2-4 (4.80) this year, in contrast with Haren’s 4-2 (3.08).

Conor Jackson, who was resting a sore hamstring yesterday, should be back in the lineup tonight.

Tonight is the first of 10 straight games outside the division; then they have 3 at home against the Giants; then they don’t see another division rival until their July 4 set-to with the Padres. So now we will see how they really stack up against teams outside theNL West.
