Jon Lester has just no-hit the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park. The final score was 7-0. Alberto Callaspo struck out to finish it in the 9th. Until a lead-off walk that inning, no Royal had reached base since the second.
The no-hitter was the 18th in Red Sox history and the first by a Red Sox southpaw since Mel Parnell in 1956. This is the 2nd consecutive year that the BoSox have thrown no-hitters. Last year, Clay Buchholz did it in only his second major league start.
Lester now owes Jacoby Ellsbury a steak dinner. Ellsbury, playing centerfield, laid out in the fourth to rob Jose Guillen of a hit. Lester struck out 9 while walking 2 in pitching his first complete game. It was a 130-pitch effort. He averages 99 pitches a start and his previous high was 112.
CONGRATULATIONS!
