At the same time Byrnes has been striking out at the plate apparently he has been striking out on air, at least according to Maxim Magazine.

In their "Baseball's Most Factually, Phonetically, and/or Commonsensically Challenged Broadcasters, 2008 Edition" Eric Byrnes ranks as the 3rd worst for his work with Fox.

"Byrnes still concentrates on his day job with the Diamondbacks, for which he slides into everything-first base, the left-field wall, the dugout sauna-headfirst, regardless of the circumstance. Nonetheless, during his occasional studio appearances for Fox, he’s filled the "character/cognitively impaired retard" role filled by Terry Bradshaw on the network's NFL studio show. He didn't comb his hair. He riffed on dogs swimming after errant baseballs. If we don't stop him now, he'll be as ubiquitous as John Kruk within five years."

It's seems pretty harsh of Maxim to rank Byrnes worse than "Hawk" Harrelson when Byrnes did analysis as a side project while still playing the game (What's Harrelson's excuse?).

Sure Byrnes' analysis was like his play, a little out there, a little sporadic and full of energy, but it did have an endearing quality and was no worse than anything Mark Grace has done (Dropping F-bombs on air anyone).

The biggest knock on Byrnes' time in the booth had to be his hair (no we weren't judging him for style but come on). He was a blanket short of being Pig Pen from the Peanuts comic or a pair of shorts and a pizza short of being Spicoli. A guy who makes 10 million a year should be able to afford a haircut or at the very least a comb.

Here are a few suggestions of broadcasters more deserving to make the list than Byrnes:

• John Kruk
• Chris Berman
• Tim McCarver
• Steve Lyons

Eric may we suggest a Jason Giambi method to break both slumps? That or you could always ask the aforementioned Mark Grace for his advice on slump busting.
