The Last Few Days

Randy Johnson is now 4-1 after pitching 7 shutout innings against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The final score was 4-0. Career victory #288 came on four days rest. He didn’t look like he quite had command of his slider early on; he gave up 2 hits in the first inning. But as he got further into the game, he was able to locate it more consistently. This version of Randy Johnson, if backed by a bullpen that won’t blow up behind him will be a significant addition to the Diamondbacks playoff chances.

Chris Young gave RJ all the run support he needed with a bases-loaded double that brought home two runs in the fifth inning.  He also drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.

The victory gave the Diamondbacks the series 2-1.

Those of you who watch The Eric Byrnes Show probably know about Saulo Morris, the high school catcher, and big Eric Byrnes fan, who is battling leukemia. Broadcaster Daron Sutton announced Sunday that Saulo would be undergoing surgery this (past) Tuesday. We wish Saulo all the best.

The Tuesday game was a disappointment. Micah Owings struck out ten and Chris Snyder hit a solo homer, but the D’Backs lost to the Florida Marlins 3-2 in the first game of an eastern road trip.

The Snakes scored once in the fourth inning, but lost a runner at the beginning of the inning when Chris Young, who had doubled to start things off, got caught trying to steal third.

Eric Byrnes singled to lead off the fifth inning and made his way to third, but then made a baserunning error. When Chris Snyder grounded to third, Byrnes started heading home instead of back to third and third baseman Jorge Cantu caught him in a rundown.

In the eighth inning, the D’Backs had bases loaded and one out when the Marlins brought in their closer, Kevin Gregg. He struck out Justin Upton and Byrnes to get out of the inning unscathed.

All told, the Diamondbacks were 0-8 with RISP. They beat themselves. Don’t do that tonight, guys.  Brandon Webb is trying to go 10-0.
