The Arizona Diamondbacks shuffled their roster today, designating Brandon Meddersfor assignment, and activating Doug Davis from the disabled list. Davis had surgery to remove a cancerous thyroid on April 10th.
The decision to option Medders means that fireballing rookie righthander Max Scherzer will stay with the big-league team, and will be bumped from the starting rotation into the bullpen. Scherzer has made 3 starts for the D-Backs, going 0-2, with a 2.33 ERA.

This is obviously great news for the Diamondbacks. Not only that Davis is healthy enough to pitch so shortly after cancer surgery, but his return should provide an emotional boost to a club that is only 21-16 since April 10th, the day Davis had surgery. Davis will be on the mound Friday in Atlanta as the D-Backs open up a 4-game Memorial Day weekend series with the Braves.
The Diamondbacks also made the right move on Scherzer. Despite the 0-2 record, Scherzer has proven that he belongs in the bigs. Further evidence of this is Scherzer’s ridiculous numbers with the Sidewinders in AAA earlier this season. In 4 starts with Tucson, Scherzer had 4 no decisions, but a 38 to 3 strikeout to walk ratio in only 23 innings, and a 1.17 ERA.
