Who Is The Best Pitcher To Wear A Diamondback’s Uniform?

Brandon Webb’s extremely hot start got us to thinking, who is the best pitcher to ever wear a Diamondbacks uniform (based strictly on the time they spent here in the desert). The discussion obviously boils down to one of three pitchers. Brandon Webb, Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling.

Here is how the statistics break down:

Brandon Webb (2003-Present)
Games Pitched IP ER SO CG BB K/9 ERA
174 1159.3 411 936 13 385 7.24 3.19
Accomplishments
Won the 2006 Cy Young award. In 2007 pitched 42 scoreless innings and in 2008 become only the second pitcher to start 9-0 since World War II
Randy Johnson (1999-2004, 2007-Present)
Games Pitched IP ER SO CG BB K/9 ERA
209 1495.2 452 1941 36 469 11.68 2.72
Accomplishments
Johnson won 4 straight Cy Young Awards, threw a perfect game and won co-World Series MVP. Honors
Curt Schilling (2000-2003)
Games Pitched IP ER SO CG BB K/9 ERA
107 781.7 273 875 18 117 10.07 3.14
Accomplishments
Won 2001 World Series Co-MVP

When you take a look at the stats you realize how truly impressive Randy Johnson’s time (We say time because he isn’t the same pitcher now as he was from 1999-2004) with the D-backs. His numbers are gaudy. He pitched 36 complete games and averaged 11.68 strike outs per 9 innings. He was about as dominant as any pitcher in a 5 year stretch and has one of the greatest sports moments coming out of the bullpen in game 7 of the 2001 World Series.

Although Johnson is the greatest to wear a uniform right now Brandon Webb’s statistics thus far are very impressive. Give him a few more years and we very easily could be commenting on how Arizona has been lucky enough to witness two of the greatest pitchers the game has ever seen pitch for the home town team. Pretty impressive for a team only 10 years old.
