Eric Byrnes‘ homerun Friday night vs. Atlanta was the 100th of his career. Something interesting about that 100 home run plateau for Byrnes? Not one of them was a grand slam. Byrnes finally got one on his 101st career homer Sunday, a shot off future Hall of Famer Tom Glavine in the 5th inning that turned a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 Diamondbacks lead. The D-Backs went on to beat the Braves 9-3.
Chris Young led off the game with a home run, and had a run-scoring sac fly which scored Byrnes in the 9th. Micah Owings went 6 innings, striking out 3, and upped his record to 6-3 on the season. The bigger story on Owings is that he went 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts at the plate, plummeting his average to a sub-.300 level (gasp!!).
The two teams finish their 4-game holiday weekend series at Turner Field tomorrow with Brandon Webb, trying to bounce back from his first loss of the season, facing Atlanta’s Jair Jurrjens (whose name is worth 83 points in scrabble). Don’t sleep in too long on your day off, first pitch is at 10:05 am Arizona time.
Here’s what they’re saying elsewhere about the Diamondbacks’ 9-3 rout of the Braves…
