Pyrrhic Victory

June 30th, 2008

The Diamondbacks beat the Brewers behind Doug Davis’ quality start,  6-3. The hot bat was wielded by Mark Reynolds, who drove in three, including a solo homer.

But catcher Chris Snyder got his bell rung by a foul ball and had to be replaced by Miguel Montero and Disaster: Eric Byrnes strained (read: tore) his left hamstring trying to steal third after hitting a beautiful double down the left field line and dashing to second with no apparent problems.

He was batting seventh; it was his first time up, and he had a little smile on his face after he got into second standing. But when he tried to steal, he broke down about halfway there and though he tried to keep going he fell short of third base in what looked like a slide but really wasn’t. It had no slide to it.

He got up and left the field under his own power but limping. Jeff Salazar took his place in left field the next inning. Conor Jackson played left later in the game.

Rattlers’ season ends with playoff loss to Grand Rapids

June 30th, 2008

The Arizona Rattlers stay in the postseason was a short one, as they were defeated by the Grand Rapids Rampage 48-41 in the Wildcard round of the Arena Football Playoffs.

The Rattlers were driving late for a potential game-tying touchdown, but were stopped 4 times inside the Grand Rapids’ 5-yard line.
Quarterback Jeff Smoker was stopped on a sneak attempt on 4th and goal to turn the ball over on downs, and effectively end the game.

Marana Mountain View graduate James MacPherson completed 27 of 40 passes for 285 yards and 5 touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner to Kenny Higgins with 6:26 left in the game. Higgins and Cole Magner each had 2 touchdown catches for the Rampage.

Siaha Burley and Trandon Harvey had two tds apiece for Arizona, who finished the season by losing 3 consecutive games. The Rattlers never led, but were able to pull even on three different occasions in the 2nd half.

Grand Rapids (7-10) moves on to face top-seeded Chicago Sunday in the Divisional Playoffs.

D-Backs take opener from Brewers, 6-3

June 30th, 2008

Mark Reynolds went 3 for 3 with and drove in 3 runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks started a 7-game homestand with a 6-3 win over Milwaukee. Reynolds, who has a batting average 56 points higher at Chase Field than on the road, had an rbi double in the 1st inning, another run-scoring double in the 5th, and a solo home run in the 8th.

Diamondbacks starter Doug Davis wasn’t as sharp as he’s been recently, but he was good enough to get the win. Davis went 5 and 2/3 innings, giving up 5 hits, 4 walks and 3 runs to even his record on the year at 3-3. Brandon Lyon rebounded from his first blown save in more than 2 months yesterday, by working a perfect 9th with 2 strikeouts for his 17th save of the year.

It wasn’t all good news for Arizona. Left fielder Eric Byrnes appeared to aggravate a hamstring injury while he was attempting to steal third base in the 2nd inning. He was replaced by Jeff Salazar. Manager Bob Melvin told the media after the game that Byrnes would definitely land back on the disabled list. For how long, he was unsure.

The win was for the first for the Diamondbacks against the Brewers this season. Milwaukee swept a 3-game series in early June at Miller Park.

What Up With That? — Part 2

    June 30th, 2008

I take the weekend off from baseball to attend a seminar and come back to find out the bullpen blew Dan Haren’s beautiful start. Not Qualls this time, Pena and Lyon. D’Backs bullpen: Equal Opportunity Start Blowers. For the time being, at least.

The curse of the modern age. Starters today generally don’t have the stamina to pitch complete games. They start wilting around 100 pitches and you’ve gotta bring in relievers and well, nobody’s perfect. They mess up from time to time and have a tendency, at least with the D’Backs, of matching each other. They are either great together or lousy together. And right now they are lousy together. Equal Opportunity Start Blowers.  When I was a kid, back in the day of Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, Bob Gibson, Jim Palmer etc., starters had the stamina to go the distance when they had their game on.

AZ Sports Power Players: Week of June 30th

    June 30th, 2008

Every Monday we name the top 5 news makers in Arizona sports for the week prior. These can be either good or bad for Arizona Sports. Heck, they can be former players, coaches, opposing teams, etc. We call this the super, ultimate, face crushing, Arizona Sports Power Players Poll of the week!

As always feel free to comment on our selections and make your own nominations.

AZ Sports Power Players: Week of June 30th
      RK (LW) PERSON/TEAM COMMENT
Robin Lopez is now a Phoenix Sun 1 (NR) Robin Lopez The Suns got their man and Robin Lopez will hopefully come in and make an immediate impact on the defensive end for the Suns. While not the best Lopez in the draft, the Suns had been eying Lopez in the 15th spot and were able to snag him.
dtaurasi.jpg 2 (NR) Diana Taurasi Leading the team to wins in the Mercury’s last 5 out of 6, Diana has topped 25 points four times and took player of the week honors for the week of the 16th-22nd.
Steve Kerr was ecstatic with his picks 3 (NR) Steve Kerr Steve Kerr had a monster draft, pulling out both of his top targets, Robin Lopez and Goran Dragic. Goran might be stuck in Europe for the next year or two, but if Kerr can now find a way to get Goran in a Suns uni by October, he will be in great shape.
Brandon Webb and the Diamondbacks continue to slide… 4 (NR) Diamondbacks The Diamondbacks are truly free falling. After winning only 2 games on their recent road trip, they are limping back home this week for a much needed home stand. The team that was the best in the league for the first month and a half, now has been one of the worst in the league for the latest month and a half. And the most amazing part: this team is still in first…
Trevell Quinley beats out former champ Dwight Phillips(pictured) 5 (NR) Trevell Quinley Former ASU Long Jumper Trevell Quinley has a career-tying best of 26 feet, 11 3/4 jump to secure an Olympic bid, beating out former Olympic Gold Medalist and fellow ASU athlete Dwight Phillips.

Diamondbacks limp home to face Brewers

    June 30th, 2008

The Arizona Diamondbacks may have kissed the ground when they got off their flight from Miami to Phoenix last night. They did just complete a 2-7 road trip, after blowing a late 2-run lead yesterday to the Marlins. It’s not news that the Diamondbacks are struggling offensively, but they are pretty decent with the bats at the friendly confines of Chase Field. The Diamondbacks are the worst road hitting team in baseball, posting a paltry .216 average, 23 points worse than the team ranked 29th, the Detroit Tigers. But at home, the D-Backs are respectable, hitting .277 as a team. They’ve already experienced an offensive blackout in Milwaukee this year, when they scored 5 runs in a 3-game sweep at the hands of the Brewers earlier this month. It’ll be interesting to see if the change of scenery will warm the D-Backs’ bats. Here’s a closer look at both teams…

Milwaukee Brewers (44-37, 3rd place in NL Central, 4.5 games behind Chicago Cubs)
Manager: Ned Yost (6th year with Brewers, 418-472)

    Offensive Leaders:
    AVG: Corey Hart, .292
    Runs: Rickie Weeks, 47
    Hits: Ryan Braun, 94
    HR: Ryan Braun, 20
    RBI: Ryan Braun, 58
    SB: Rickie Weeks, 11

    Pitching Leaders:
    INN: Ben Sheets, 111 1/3
    Wins: Ben Sheets, 9
    ERA: Ben Sheets, 2.83
    Saves: Salomon Torres, 13

Bottom Line: The Brewers, for the last 2 seasons, have been everybody’s sexy pick to win the NL Central, or at least land a Wildcard berth. The Brewers currently are in 3rd place in the very tough NL Central, but they trail only the Cardinals in the Wildcard pecking order. Ryan Braun has picked up where he left off a year ago, when he won the NL Rookie of the Year Award. Braun leads the Brewers in home runs and RBI, while hitting a respectable .287. And manager Ned Yost has been able to hide Braun’s questionable glove in left field this year, after Braun comitted 26 errors at third base last season. He has yet to commit an error in left in ‘08. The Brewers really could start to make a push in the standings if Prince Fielder heats up. The world’s heftiest vegetarian has 16 home runs and 42 RBI, while hitting .271.

The oft-injured Ben Sheets is having a spectacular year for the Brew Crew, going 9-2 with a 2.83 ERA. Through the first half of the season, Sheets is a legitimate Cy Young candidate. The good news is, for the second time this year, the Diamondbacks won’t have to face Sheets. He took a 5-0 loss to red-hot Minnesota on Sunday. In the bullpen, Salomon Torres has been a God-send for Milwaukee. Eric Gagne struggled as the Brewers’ closer, with a 6.98 ERA, before going on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right rotator cuff on May 21. Torres has converted 13 of 15 save opportunities, while posting a 2.62 ERA. Torres picked up a save against the Diamondbacks on June 2.

    Milwaukee’s Pitchers vs. Arizona
Tonight: Dave Bush (2008: 4-7, 4.94 ERA; career vs. Diamondbacks: 4-0, 3.55 ERA)
Tuesday: Jeff Suppan (2008: 4-6, 4.05 ERA; career vs. Diamondbacks: 2-3, 3.86 ERA)
Wednesday: Seth McClung (2008: 5-3, 4.25 ERA; career vs. Diamondbacks: 1-0, 4.05 ERA)
Thursday: Manny Parra (2008: 8-2, 3.95 ERA; career vs. Diamondbacks: 1-0, 1.29 ERA)

Arizona Diamondbacks (41-41, 1st place in NL West, 2.5 games ahead of Los Angeles)

Manager: Bob Melvin (4th year with Diamondbacks, 284-283)

    Offensive Leaders:
    AVG: Conor Jackson, .309
    Runs: Mark Reynolds, 54
    Hits: Orlando Hudson, 81
    HR: Mark Reynolds, 16
    RBI: Mark Reynolds, 49
    SB: Conor Jackson, 6

    Pitching Leaders:
    INN: Brandon Webb 112
    Wins: Brandon Webb 12
    ERA: Dan Haren, 2.85
    Saves: Brandon Lyon 16

Bottom Line: Its getting to be about that time of the season, where people are wondering what the Diamondbacks are going to do to kick-start a dormant offense. The trade deadline is a little more than a month away. Do the D-Backs play “rent-a-slugger” with someone like Adam Dunn? Do they call up someone from Triple-A, like Sidewinders’ third baseman Jamie D’Antona, who is hitting .383? Or do they cross their fingers and hope someone gets hot? Mark Reynolds and Chris Young have showed the propensity in the past to carry a team offensively, and Eric Byrnes could be thrown into that category as well. But since returning from the DL, Byrnes .091 (2 for 22) with 6 strikeouts, 0 runs scored, and 0 RBI.

    Arizona’s pitchers vs. Milwaukee:
Tonight: Doug Davis (2008: 2-3, 3.68 ERA; career vs. Brewers: 0-1, 5.79 ERA)
Tuesday: Randy Johnson (2008: 4-6, 4.94 ERA; career vs. Brewers: 18-8, 3.46 ERA)
Wednesday: Micah Owings (2008: 6-7, 5.18 ERA; career vs. Brewers: 0-2, 8.00 ERA)
Thursday: Brandon Webb (2008: 12-4, 3.21 ERA; career vs. Brewers: 2-1, 2.66 ERA)

    Thoughts After 2008 Camp

    June 29th, 2008

So much to see and maybe it all means jack since it was, after all practice and a chance to evaluate what the kids need to work on in order to be successful at the next level. But maybe it also meant a culling process, which kids to invite to training camp, to see who stood out, who had the drive and tools to take a run at the main roster.

Yep it was both sets of things and this group of kids were up to the challenge in a dozen ways.

Mikkel Boedker, Kevin Porter stood heads and shoulders above the other kids. Hands, heads and skates were all on fire just bout every time they made a move. The Bod and KT had a chemistry that was phenomenal and they looked very polished out there. Both still need weight and maturity, but I fully expect Mikkel’s name to be right there with Turris’ on the final roster. Kevin Porter is almost a case of instant chemistry with whomever he plays with. This guy could setup the algae in my pool and it would score. (ok maybe thats a small exaggeration) but give this guy a few runs with a line mate and he makes you think there’s some truth to Pierre’s telepathic link scenario.

After those two it gets kinda dicey. MacLean is going to be one hell of a left wing but needs some skate work. Tikhonov is closer to the roster than I expected and had a real good camp but playin mostly with Kevin and Chad probably helped, so I can’t really factor out the Michigan connection to give a fairer assessment, I think he gets a real long look at camp and preseason. Kolarik ditto. It would be a sorry thing to break up what he and Porter have going on. (think Sedins with both brothers sharing scoring ops instead of one passer and one scorer)

Summers and Hextall were the next tier in offense and had moments of creativity and shine but since Chris is apparently going back to school in the fall we can count him out of training camp. Hextall will probably be giving the AHL a good RW perfomance (along w/ Pat Brosnihan) and challenging hard for a spot fairly quickly but neither has the speed of the others, good vision though and fairly responsible defensively.

EDIT: Hex will be attending the University of North Dakota…

Not sure what will happen w/ Ferrerio, Perry, Long and Lunden… interesting players but very much over shadowed by the draftees. Staal, as alluded, will be a work in progress for a while.

Not sure if anyone else noticed that this camp was overrun with defensemen?

    “Best Of” - Part 3

    June 29th, 2008

The Cardinals have had many memorable plays in regular season games since they’ve moved to Arizona, many for better and many more for worse unfortunately.  Today I am focusing on the positive.  The best plays since the Cardinals moved to Arizona.  This again is just my opinon.  This also encompasses the regular season.  That being said, that only eliminates two games.  Those games being in the 1998 playoffs against Dallas and Minnesota.

Play #5:  December 28, 2003 - WR Nate Poole’s 28 yard TD catch from QB Josh McCown at the end of the fourth quarter against the Minnesota Vikings.   Although the Cardinals had nothing to play for except a fourth win, they had the chance to play spoiler.  They played the part to perfection.  Poole’s catch not only prevented the Vikings from attending the postseason, it also vaulted the jubilant Green Bay Packers into the postseason.  In fact, as a gesture of their appreciation, Poole was invited to attend the Green Bay Packers playoff game as their guest.  No that’s a nice play Green Bay!

Play #4:  September 7, 1997 - K Kevin Butler completes Arizona’s comeback from a 22-7 third quarter deficit with a 20 yard FG in OT to lead the Cardinals to a 25-22 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.  Not only was this a late afternoon start at 5pm on national television, this also was a great testament to a team that never gave up.  Down 19-7 at half and 22-7 early in the third, the comeback was completed in OT, sending many joyous fans home happy and high-fiving each other up and down the stands.

Play #3:  September 30, 2007 - WR/KR/PR Steve Breaston returned a punt 73 yards in the fourth quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers to vault the Cardinals to a 21-14 win over the men in yellow and black.  The Cardinals at that point only had managed one touchdown in a relatively low scoring game.

Play #2:  December 27, 1998 - K Chris Jacke’s 52 yard field goal leads Arizona into their first playoff since moving from St. Louis 10 years earlier, defeating the San Diego Chargers 16-13.  It is also the last time the Cardinals made the postseason.  After taking a 13-6 lead, San Diego scored a touchdown in the fourth to tie the match before Jacke kicked the Cardinals into celebration.

Play #1:  November 6, 1988 - WR Roy Green’s 9 yard touchdown catch from QB Neil Lomax with six seconds remaining in the game capped an amazing comeback to defeat the San Francisco 49ers 24-23.  Down 23-7 entering the fourth quarter, many fans, including yours truly, began heading for the exits.  By the time it was over, those who stayed, were treated to some great NFL Football.  Steve Young was forced into the game by a Joe Montana injury and had dominated the Cardinals for the first three quarters.  Those who left were forced to listen on their radios and left some thinking something special may be happening with this team.  They did beat the NY Giants the following week to be in a tie for first place.  However an injury to Neil Lomax ended his season and the Cardinals as you will remember went on to lose their last five games to finish 7-9 in their first season in the desert.

Bullpen can’t hold Haren’s lead, Marlins win 4-3

    June 29th, 2008

Jorge Cantu’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Florida Marlins a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dolphin Stadium in Miami on Sunday.

The Diamondbacks grabbed their first lead of the day when Stephen Drew smacked a 2-run homer in the 3rd inning. Chris Burke added a rare rbi, singling in Conor Jackson in the 7th to make the lead 3-1. It was Burke’s first run batted in since May 13.

Diamondbacks starter Dan Haren left the game after seven strong innings. Haren allowed only one Florida run, and only 5 hits. Tony Pena pitched the 8th, giving up a run-scoring single by Robert Andino that plated Josh Willingham to make it 3-2 Arizona. Brandon Lyon came in to attempt to nail it down in the 9th, but shortstop Hanley Ramirez tied it at 3 with a solo home run. Then, Jeremy Hermida doubled, setting the stage for Cantu’s walk-off heroics. Lyon took the loss, while blowing his first save since April 6th, the first week of the season.

The Diamondbacks sink back to .500 after a disastrous 2-7 road trip that saw them score a total of 14 runs in the 7 losses.

    MLB.com: Recap | Boxscore

Here’s what others are saying about the Diamondbacks late-inning collapse in Florida…

  • Marlins rally to top D-Backs [Azcentral.com]
  • Marlins rally in 9th to top D-Backs 4-3 [East Valley Tribune]

  • Home, sweet home for the Diamondbacks. After a 9-game roadtrip the Diamondbacks return to Chase Field for 7 games, starting with a 4-game series with Milwaukee starting Monday in downtown Phoenix. Dave Bush gets the start for the Brew Crew, and Doug Davis, the former Brewer, takes the hill for Arizona. First pitch is at 6:40 PM.

    All the Goran Details

    June 29th, 2008

Paul Coro in the AZ Republic has a great recap and update on the Dragic pick.

    Here's the key plot points:

Dragic cannot be bought out of his contract with Spanish club Tau Ceramica until July 2009. The buyout is $1,550,000, with the Suns able to pay $500,000.

In 2010 he would be free, but he likely will be with the Suns by next summer. Hopes of arranging an exit this summer range from promising to guarded.

Unless the dollar rebounds quickly against the Euro, it looks likes its going to take a hefty sum to buy out Goran's contract. I have no idea at this point what he stands to make playing in Europe this season but it's kind of difficult to see how the Suns could pay him enough to cover both the buy out (if Tau agreed to one) and also make it worth his while to play here.

Second round rookies don't get signed to long term NBA contracts and the one's they get are sub $1m. We will have to continue to monitor this situation and hope the Suns can figure something out.

and as for the Suns plans for him...

The goal is for Dragic to play a low-pressure role as the Suns' third point guard this season behind a veteran free-agent pickup such as Tyronn Lue, Anthony Johnson or Chris Duhon.

This is quite the interesting little tidbit as well. Note the lack of Barbosa's name there? Hmmmm. I also wonder if the Sun's don't think he's ready to be the #2 PG if they aren't better off letting him play in Europe this year and develop more.

And finally, here's a great  video from inside the Suns draft war room courtesy of Suns.com. Note that the Suns were prepared to pay $750k plus an '09 pick and ended up paying $500k. Clearly, the Suns want this kid bad.

    The Hill Effect

    June 29th, 2008

I remember when I first heard the news that Grant Hill was coming to play for the Suns. One of the first thoughts that crossed my mind was that he was going to help us, that he is a great player and a great guy, great competitor. In a matter of seconds, all of these thoughts went away with the ugly premonition that he was not going to help us at all. He most certainly was going to get injured and spend most of the games sitting in the bench. Well, I guess he proved me wrong, kind of.

The Suns had nothing to lose, or at least that’s what they thought at the time. They would get a versatile player, with the ability to create his own shot, good defender, great hustler and a veteran who would not panic at crunch time, not only that, they would get him for $1.8 million this season and almost $2 million in 2008-09 at the player's option.

His agent said at the time:

”Obviously money wasn't the biggest factor here, He had offers for a lot more money. Grant wants a chance to win a championship and he wanted to go to a place that would give him a chance to contribute. Phoenix was the perfect fit."

Oh and he was, maybe too perfect. Grant would become a starter, and many of us thought that it was a mistake, it’s still debatable. What we know, for sure, is how fast these opinions were silenced and how quickly these thoughts vanished from our heads once we saw him play.

Hill averaged 13.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 2007-08 while shooting at least 50 percent from the field (.503) for the third time in the last four seasons and establishing a career-high in free-throw efficiency (.867). Both his rebound and assist averages were his highest in five seasons.

But it was not only his numbers, every time he stepped on the court we would see him making a great pass or an awesome drive or grab a critical rebound and maybe the eventual Slam Dunk.

Grant Hill was back, and God knows we needed him, with an inconsistent Diaw and a streaky Barbosa, he was bailing us out of a huge mess. Grant Hill was back, there was no doubt about it and we felt lucky, really lucky.

Ironically, having him around was like taking a breath of fresh air. He did not take things for granted, he was healthy, playing at a high level for a championship caliber team. He became the spark that the team needed, a team that was upset, hurt and stuck in time with a playoff hangover.

The horrible thought of Grant getting injured became even more scary, losing him would make Coach D make adjustments ----and we all knew that was not his forte---- we would jump out of our seats every time he fell on the floor, grab our heads and pray for the best…and then sigh in relief  when we saw he was Ok.

The rest is history, Grant had an appendectomy done and was bothered by a pulled groin ever since (along with a bruised wrist). He was never the same. He morphed back into the Grant Hill of the Orlando Magic, the one that you couldn’t count on, the one sitting on the bench in a suit.

A lot have been said about his decision of not coming clean and just saying that he couldn’t play. So I will no get into that. What I know for sure is that this played a big part in the first round loss. It didn’t allow the coach to make adjustments before the series started, the game plan was the same, but we were missing an important piece, the problem was that we didn’t know…until it was too late.

I can understand why he stayed quiet, maybe he felt good before each game, maybe he was so happy to be there that he didn’t want to spoil the moment. Perhaps life couldn’t be so unfair to just lift him really high and then just…drop him. But here, in the valley of the Sun, we know unfair…we have managed to know her really well. And yet here we stand. Looking forward.

I still believe in this team, we have a lot of talent. If Grant stays, he has already proved that he can help us.

Grant said that he felt that playing here was like a reward, to be able to play with the good guys.

Regardless of what happened or happens…it has certainly felt that way from my end.

The Direction of the Suns ?!

    June 29th, 2008

Not sure which way the Suns are going, but at least Robin Lopez is very a funny guy.

After watching his press conference I already love Robin Lopez!

But…Lopez is at best an NBA bench player, maybe a solid pro for years but will take time to develop since the guy, based on what I know is very limited with the basketball. Next year he could be more or less a Brian Skinner (no blonde beard…but that hairs rock), more athletic but a worse mid range shooter, even if Steve Kerr stated he has a good shooting touch.

He also has the perfect skills (solid defender, good rebounder) to play alongside Stoudemire (great offensive player, possibly the best in the NBA at his position). I would have loved the pick in the second round.

With second round pick Goran Dragic very unlikely to be in Phoenix next season. It means the Suns are still looking for the 2008/09 back up to Steve Nash. He has a nice upside, but he’s at best a 2-3 year project. He’ll be ready once Nash will be gone.

The direction of the Suns is quite unclear at the moment. The Suns roster looks like this:

Guard: Steve Nash, Raja Bell, Leandro Barbosa, D.J. Strawberry and Goran Dragic, maybe.
Forwards: Grant Hill, Boris Diaw, Alando Tucker.
Center: Shaquille O’Neal, Amaré Stoudemire, Robin Lopez.

So far the Suns are the same as last year: very good, old at key positions, not enought depth, without a clear identity and overall not good enough for a Championship run.

    Yours truly, Steve Fan
Robin Lopez is now a Phoenix Sun

Webb, D-Backs break skid in Miami

    June 28th, 2008

Chris Young and Mark Reynolds combined for 5 RBIs and Brandon Webb pitched 6 strong innings to become the Majors’ first 12-game winner as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated Florida 6-2 in Miami.

Webb gave up just 2 runs and 5 hits while striking out 8 to grab his first win since June 6th.

The Diamondbacks did the bulk of their damage in the 6th inning, putting up 5 runs. Reynolds broke a 1-1 tie with a 2-run double. Young then tripled in 2 runs, and Augie Ojeda added an RBI double to put the game out of reach for Arizona.

The win marks the first time the Diamondbacks have won at Dolphin Stadium this season. They were 0-4 going into the ballgame.
