Tracking Arizonans in MLB draft
The Major League Baseball first-year player draft is under way. Throughout the day we will provide you with information on where Arizonans get drafted and who your Arizona Diamondbacks select.
Arizona Diamondbacks Picks:
Name: Daniel Schlereth
Position: LHP
HS/College: University of Arizona
MLB.com Commentary:Schlereth was drafted in the eighth round last year by the A’s, but chose to return to Arizona. He’s got three decent offerings, though he struggles at times with commanding them. He misses a lot of bats, but he also will pile up walks at times. He’s got a football mentality on the mound, courtesy of his father, former NFLer Mark, and could be the kind of left-handed setup man who gets to the bigs quickly.
Compensation round (43):

Name: Wade Miley
Position: LHP
HS/College: Southeastern Louisiana University
Saber Scouting Commentary:Miley has been a strikeout pitcher with Southeastern Louisiana, and although I don’t expect him to be that type of pitcher as a pro, it does show his advanced feel for pitching is just overwhelming college hitters.
Third round (73):

Name: Bryan Shaw
Position: RHP
HS/College: Cal St. Long Beach
Saber Scouting Commentary: Bryan Shaw was 2-1, 1.29 with eight saves as Long Beach’s closer and according to Baseball America “has a big-time arm”.
Forth round (104):

Name: Kevin Eichhorn
Position: RHP
HS/College: Aptos HS (Calif.)
MLB.com Commentary:A huge start in front of a large audience at the National Classic in late March certainly didn’t hurt, but Eichhorn will have to work past the “undersized righty” stigma. He does have two decent offerings, plus command and poise to help him with that, as well as good bloodlines — his father Mark spent 11 seasons in the bigs. A few years at Santa Clara might not hurt, but that will depend on when he’s drafted.
Forth round (138):
Fourth round (138):
Name: Ryne White
Position: LHP
HS/College: Purdue University
Name: Collin Cowgill
Position: CF
HS/College: University of Kentucky
MLB.com Commentary:Cowgill is one of those college outfielders whose performance surpasses how his tools grade out. He’s got a good hitting approach, but scouts don’t expect him to hit for power in the future. He most likely profiles best as a fourth-outfielder type, the kind of guy who could fill in every day in center, but wouldn’t be seen as a long-term solution. After turning down the A’s (29th round) last year, he’s certainly improved his Draft status this year.
