Collins back in running for Suns job, Del Negro considered in Chicago?
File this under the “just thinking out loud category” but could the Suns be waiting till late next week to name their head coach for a specific reason?
Remember all the noise made about Doug Collins taking the Bulls job last week?
Well Collins has removed himself from consideration for the Bulls job today:
“I gave him a few days and then he had the issues he had to deal with Ozzie [Guillen] and Kenny Williams. I knew he was into that stuff. I just called him today and said, `I just want to take this angst away. You know I could feel it in your voice the other day. I know how much you respect me as a basketball guy and I know you know I could do a great job for you.’ But his feeling was: I could never fire you. I care about you too much. And I said, `Well, Jerry, then we can’t get into a job where that is even a thought.’”
With Collins not taking the Chicago job does that mean he is still in the mix for the Phoenix job?
Kerr did say earlier in the week that:
“We did speak with Doug (Collins) and had great conversations with him. We talked about different roles and different ideas. But Doug and I are really close friends too. I’ve gotten to know him very well and have great respect for him. Until he actually makes an announcement or it actually happens, I’m not going to speculate what’s going on there. We’ll see what happens with Doug but I wish him well. He’s a good friend. We were broadcast partners for three years. Doug’s great and he’s got the itch so we’ll see if we leaps back in.”
It seems as if Kerr is saying he has nothing but respect for Collins but that things didn’t work out for Collins to take the Suns job. Who knows though stranger things have happened, see the Shaq trade. If Collins was still being considered by the Suns it might sense as to why the Suns coaching search will continue into it’s forth week.
With Collins no longer a candidate for the Bulls job Chicago has decided to interview Phoenix Suns assistant general manager Vinny Del Negro for the job.
One thing is for sure, this has been one of the craziest four weeks in Suns history.
