For better or worse, Porter and Suns make it official
While walking through the Phoenix Bridal Show today I couldn’t help but think of the Terry Porter hiring. Yes, I know. The fact that I admitted attending a bridal show means half of you have already dismissed my opinion and the other half want me to turn in my man card. Just stay with me.
As I saw all the soon to be brides and grooms I wondered… Had the Suns just entered into a marriage with Porter that would last for the long haul? Or was it one destined to end in acrimonious divorce?
Kerr and the Suns certainly “dated” a lot before they decided to settle down. Porter seems to fit all the expectations they have in a long term partner.
- Former player: Portland, Minnesota, Miami, San Antonio
- Head coaching experience: Milwaukee Bucks 2003-2005
- More defensive oriented
- Favors a run and gun style
Some will say that Porter has already failed in a previous “marriage” with the Bucks. Maybe the Suns should consider someone who doesn’t bring a “checkered” past to the relationship. The thing is, Porter got a raw deal the first time around. In his first year with the Bucks, Porter gave them everything they could have expected. He took them to the playoffs, a feat they’ve yet to accomplish since their “divorce”. If it weren’t for circumstances beyond his control, namely TJ Ford’s freak injury, the Bucks would have never shown him the door.
While Porter wasn’t as sexy as some of the other candidates, mainly Doug Collins, he seems loyal and willing to try hard to make it work. It most certainly wasn’t a shallow pick by Kerr and the Suns.
Overall the fans feelings seem to resound Bruce Springsteen’s lyrics, “you ain’t a beauty but hey you’re alright” Terry.
Like every relationship it won’t be truly tested until after the honeymoon. When the couple gets settled in and living together, ie: the first preseason game, we’ll see what this marriage is made of.
For my money, the Suns made the right choice. They didn’t need the sexiest or the young and up and coming choice. They needed exactly what they got. They need someone who communicates and that is the right fit for who they are and who they want to become. In the end, that’s what everyone hopes for in a relationship.
Lucky for the Suns they only had to commit to him for 3-years and not for life. If only some of the people at the bridal show could get the same deal.
