It could be worse Suns fans
So some of you aren’t thrilled with the Terry Porter hire. Sure he isn’t a “big name” head coach but it could be worse.
You could root for the Chicago Bulls.
Not only have the Bulls had as long of a coaching search as the Suns but they’ve interviewed more candidates. Which is tough to believe seeing as Steve Kerr interviewed everyone he knew. Jerry Reinsdorf must have a bigger Rolodex or less regard for his or John Paxson’s time.
At least the Suns weren’t embarrassed during their search. The Bulls had reportedly named Doug Collins their coach before owner Jerry Reinsdorf decided he loved Collins too much to have to fire him when the Bulls continued to under achieve. Reinsdorf’s reservations led to Collins removing his name from consideration and John Paxon pulling out his hair.
Now comes the report that the Bulls have decided to offer Suns assistant General Manager Vinny Del Negro their new head coaching job and Del Negro will accept the offer.
If you thought Porter was under qualified look at the coaching resume Del Negro brings to the Bulls.
No there isn’t a missing paragraph there, that is his experience. He has been on the bench as a coach for exactly the same amount of days as the Suns have been NBA champions…zero.
Del Negro went from playing for 11 seasons, to the radio booth, to the front office of the Suns and now to leading the Chicago Bulls. While working as part of the Suns broadcast crew earns you the right to some things (mostly the right to wear ear plugs) it doesn’t make you qualified to be a head coach.
So the next time you want to question Kerr’s decision on head coach remember…at least you aren’t a Bulls fan.
