Suns name coaching staff

dan-majerle62008.jpgThe news: According to Paul Coro, the Suns are have named Terry Porter’s coaching staff.

The list of coaches is one that is familiar to Suns fans with one exception. Alvin Gentry will remain as the lead assistant on the staff and will be joined by former Suns guard Dan Majerle, former Chicago Bull center and head coach Bill Cartwright and Igor Kokoskov, a former colleague of Porter and Gentry’s.

The take: There was nothing “sexy” about the names on the Suns coaching staff list.

Gentry is a solid holdover from the D’Antoni regime and with 20 years of coaching experience he can provide guidance for Porter. One possible issue is that the players may complain about Porter to him because of pre-existing relationships.

Cartwright brings experience but it’s not clear if he is the right kind of coach to motivate Amare Stoudemire. His game wasn’t predicated on athleticism the way Amare’s was and who knows if he’ll be able to get through to Amare.

Igor Kokoskov makes sense due to his familiarity with Porter. He was probably the one guy on the staff that Porter had complete say in, a la Dan D’Antoni. He brings an interesting view point as he is was the first full-time non-American assistant coach in the NBA.

Which brings us to Dan Majerle. It’s unclear which should upset fans more, the fact that he is on the staff when he has no coaching experience or the fact that he is no longer in the broadcast booth. Hopefully he will prove to be a great addition to the staff and if not at least he can teach the guys how to hit half court shots from a chair.
