Another bad inning did in the Arizona Diamondbacks. This time it was the 5th.
With a 3-0 lead in the top half of the inning, Stephen Drew led off with a single, followed by a base hit by Augie Ojeda. Runners on 1st and 2nd, nobody out, and Orlando Hudson at the plate. Hudson missed on a bunt attempt, and Stephen Drew got caught leaning toward 3rd base, and was picked off. Hudson grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Then it got really interesting in the bottom half of the inning. Conor Jackson, playing in left, lost a fly ball in the white roof of the Metrodome, allowing Delmon Young to reach with a double. The next batter, Brian Buscher singled in Jason Kubel and Young to make it 3-2. Later in the inning, Alexi Casilla (yeah I know, who are these guys?) added a 2-run single to make it 4-3. Following a Stephen Drew error, Justin Morneau’s sac fly scored Casilla to give the Twins a 5-3 margin, by which they would win.
The Twins swept the series from the Diamondbacks, who continue to display shakiness at the plate and in the field, two traits not commonly found in first-place teams in late June.
Brandon Webb took the loss, he’s now 11-4 on the season, and has lost 4 of his last 6 decisions. The D-Backs offense managed only 6 runs in their 3-game stay in Minnesota.
Here’s what others are saying about the Diamondbacks’ 3rd consecutive loss to the Twins…
Here’s the good news, Diamondback fans. Now its on to Fenway Park, where the D-Backs take on the Red Sox, a team leading the AL East with one of the top hitting lineups in baseball. Tomorrow’s festivities begin at 3:30 PM Arizona time, with Dan Haren facing Josh Beckett. Good pitching matchup…you can catch it on ESPN.
