The Arizona Diamondbacks offense didn’t explode by any stretch of the imagination, but Dan Haren made sure that didn’t matter.
The right hander went 7 innings, baffling the Boston Red Sox by giving up only 2 hits over 7 innings, and Arizona prevailed 2-1 in the opening game of a 3-game Interleague series at Fenway Park.
A scoreless tie was broken by Chris Young’s rbi double in the 7th, and the Diamondbacks tacked on a second run when Chris Snyder’s ground out scored Mark Reynolds.
Haren was pulled after 98 pitches, and Tony Pena pitched the 8th, loading the bases with 1 out, but allowed only one run on a J.D. Drew sacrifice fly that plated Julio Lugo. Reynolds closed out the 8th with an incredible diving catch at third on a missile hit by Boston’s Manny Ramirez.
The D-Backs left the bases loaded in the 9th, as Red Sox reliever consecutively struck out Justin Upton and Eric Byrnes, who made his return to the Arizona lineup after a stay on the disabled list that lasted nearly a month.
Brandon Lyon worked a 1-2-3 9th inning for his 16th save. The win breaks a 3-game losing streak for the Diamondbacks. Dan Haren was outstanding in the win. He’s given up only 3 runs in his last 3 starts.

Same two teams tomorrow at Fenway, with Doug Davis going for the D-Backs facing gigantic rookie right hander Justin Masterson of the Sox. First pitch is at 4:05 Arizona time from Beantown.
